Crap Corner – Gerard Henderson wins the first award!

The first winner for Crap Corner is Gerard Henderson. I came across this from 2003 after googling my name to see if an article I had written recently had been picked up elsewhere. Gerard was rubbishing me for suggesting that “US bombs will not liberate Iraq” and that “revolution from below is the only way Iraq can truly liberate itself from Saddam’s dictatorship.”

But I wasn’t the only one Gerard attacked. Here’s what he said about Father Duncan from the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council.

‘And Fr Duncan predicts that any invasion of Iraq to oust the Saddam regime “will” result in “millions of refugees and displaced persons” and up to 500,000 civilian casualties. Within less than a month it became apparent that this Catholic council is not blessed with infallibility. Estimated civilian casualties were a small fraction of Bruce Duncan’s estimate and there were very few refugees and displaced persons.’

After five years, millions of refugees and with the Lancet in 2006 publishing a study estimating over 650,000 dead (now backed up by Opinion Research Business which estimated in January 2008 that over 1,000,000 Iraqi citizens had died as a result of the conflict), I much prefer Fr Duncan to Gerard Henderson.

But of course Gerard had a war to sell, didn’t he?

The quote is from ‘Oh What a Luvvies’ War Part II’. For those of you who can stomach it, it is at
