Time for a House Un-Australian Activities Committee?
Tony Abbott thinks the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is Un-Australian. I am looking forward to his government setting up the House Un-Australian Activities Committee. (1)

Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Unions – support refugees

I have sent the following request to my union, the Community and Public Sector Union.

Dear Comrades

I note that Paul Howes, secretary of the right-wing AWU, has made some excellent comments in support of refugees. He has for example said:

“Rudd has an approval rating of 68 per cent . He has the unanimous loyalty of his caucus. He has an almost non-existent Opposition. He is in a unique position to change the debate. Changing the way Australia deals with race would be pretty special – that’s Labor hero stuff.”

CPSU affiliation with the Labor Party was sold to members on the basis of being better able to influence Government and the political process more generally.  Here is the CPSU’s chance.

Please make a statement in defence of refugees. I hope that being in the Labor Party and the possibility of potential safe seats for some of our leaders isn’t preventing my union attacking the Rudd Labor Government’s inhumane continuation of Howard Government policies and seeing it begin outflanked by a right wing union.

I would suggest that a CPSU statement from Stephen Jones defending asylum seekers and attacking Rudd Labor by close of business today would be appropriate. I look forward to your speedy response.
