The racist Commonwealth Games – Saturday’s socialist speak out

Bashing Indians verbally and physically seems an Australian pastime. The Empire Games – quick change the name to Commonwealth games – reflect an era of colonialism and racism that continues in various guises to this day. None of this is to excuse the Indian elite who tried to build a Commonwealth games on the back of the poorly paid working class. But it is to condemn those who are using the games to attack Indians and others in an example of the new racism or their soft liberal mates who go along with these attacks. In other news, the ‘new paradigm’ looks very much like the old politics of doing nothing on climate change, demonising refugees, attacking aborigines, opposing same sex marriage and screwing workers. The media coverage sometimes seems to have a subtext of (Nelson laugh) “Ha-ha, you’re poor!”. Combined with, how dare those Indians stuff up our glorious sports festival.

The problems of course are not simply due to India being poor, also because this “world’s largest democracy” is run by a corrupt, racist ruling class/caste.

Check what Indian leftists have to say about the Games: http://www.cpiml.org/liberation/year_2010/aug_10/feature_1.html

It would be good if rather than boosting racism the problems with the games could lift the lid on India’s claims to be a “democracy”.

Thanks Ben. A good report on who built the Games in India and the poverty they live in.

The indians should not have accepted the invitation in the first place, it is far too much for them to take on. It is not the poverty, it is the ingrained corruption that is the problem. What next.. the Olympics in Nigeria??
