Labor's super back down: a party rotten to the core
Me on superannuation and the death rattle of the ALP in The  Conversation. (0)

Marxism 2013 Conference
“Marxism is one of the best forums for debate in Australia” John Pilger gives a glowing review of the Marxism Conference. He will be returning to speak at Marxism 2013. Buy your tickets online today at www.marxismconference.org The talk on Saturday at 4 pm about taxing the rich looks interesting too.  Wonder who is giving that one? (0)

Marx and taxing economic rent in Australia
A very amateurish first draft by me on Marx and taxing economic rent, with too much explanation of basic ideas and then off on tangents and misunderstood ideas. http://docs.business.auckland.ac.nz/Doc/51-John-Passant.pdf

An article of mine on superannuation tax rorts in the Canberra Times
This is an article of mine in the Canberra Times on Tuesday 12 February. I argue that the benefits of the superannuation tax concessions go disproportionately and overwhelmingly to the rich and that it’s time to end the super tax rorts. (3)

Me in the media recently on tax
‘Mining Tax shortfall: the experts respond’ The Conversation 8 February 2013 ‘Current super concessions favour the wealthy – so why aren’t we supporting reform?” The Conversation 8 February 2013 (0)

The 99 Passant
I am about half through compiling the first volume of my most read (readers’ view) or most interesting (my view) articles from this blog.  Keep an eye out for Volume I of the 99 Passant when it is published later this year. I’ll keep you updated. (0)

More threats
As some of you may know I have been censoring the posts of a serial pest who makes anti-Muslim and racist comments and has in the past threatened me. He has posted again saying that the next time he is in my area – he names my street – he’ll ‘drop in to say g’day’. Clearly this is an attempt to further intimidate me. If anything happens to me or my family here are his details to provide to police.  jack 58.96.105.106  He has a druid name email at txc. (0)

Doctors and other bruises
I am having various tests and analysis done with a range of doctors over the coming weeks so may not be as communicative as normal on this blog. Bear with me. Hopefully I will be back in the New Year fighting fit. (4)

The new year: have your say in Saturday’s Socialist speak out

A new year brings thoughts of a better world and renewed optimism to the fore among many many people. As the new year begins, let us join together, united by our hope for a new world, one free of war, poverty, racism, sexism and homophobia. Let us continue our daily, systematic, unglamourous work towards, as Trotsky wrote, a society cleansed of all evil, oppression and violence.

Afghanistan – Australians terrorising the population

Almost 18 months ago I asked: ’Are our troops [in Afghanistan] engaged in assassinations of villagers similar to Operation Phoenix in Vietnam?’  (See Operation Phoenix: rising from the ashes in Afghanistan?) Operation Phoenix was a special campaign of assassination and torture in Vietnam aimed at destroying networks of Vietcong sympathisers in the South. I answered the question in the affirmative, [...]

Facebook down?

Is facebook down – 14.30 Australian Eastern Summer Time Thursday 30 December (about 10+ hours GMT)?

Ashes to ashes

It is time for a revolution in cricket in Australia. Let’s grab our game back from the exploiters. The grass roots should rise up and take over its running in the interests of every kid and adult playing, watching or otherwise participating in local cricket.

2010: a class odyssey

During 2010 the third phase of the global financial crisis – making workers pay – began to play itself out. Capital in Europe has used and is using its parliamentary dominance - it doesn’t matter whether reformists or conservatives are in power – to attack their working classes. While there have been magnificent strikes and demonstrations involving masses [...]

Have your say: Summer days’ socialist rave

It is the holiday season, with the aspirations of billions for peace and love coming up hard against the reality of a society of war and hate. This is systemic. No amount of wishing or praying for something is going to make it happen. A mass movement of the majority of the class that produces the wealth for a [...]

And so this is Christmas

When production is organised democratically to satisfy human need, we, the producers of society’s wealth, will have no interest in killing each other. Then every day will be Christmas.

The hope of the despairing

It is the hope of the despairing Not caught but wearing Life in vests Escaping the empty nest Taken, not blessed, upon the sea, the holy sea of cant and won’t be in our place Belonging is their other face staring, staring, staring upon our shores Whose dead are these? the question asks And the [...]

Wikileaks and rape

The left must defend Wikileaks and its role. But we must accept that Assange needs to address and answer the allegations against him in a way that does not put him at risk of US retribution for unrelated matters, namely publishing their lies.

Why socialist organisation is necessary

We must begin the task of getting organised around revolutionary ideas today if we are to make the most of the inevitable reaction against the horrors and inequalities of the capitalist system in the future, and to overthrow it for good.
