Cute & Pasty

The Murdoch papers in Australia have been indulging in some fanciful ‘defences’. Apparently the attacks on Murdoch’s UK press are the work of evil illiberal liberals. And Fairfax newspapers (like The Age) have hacked into ALP records.

According to John Hartigan, News Limited CEO, and therefore protector of Murdoch interests in Australia,  the Murdoch media here in Australia is above board. In the words of Mandy Rice Davies, he would say that, wouldn’t he?

The News of the world scandal is not just about hacking into phones. it is about bribing police, covering up criminality  and the closeness of politicians to powerful media interests.

Murdoch’s minions didn’t just hack into the phones of a dead school girl and the grieving families of terrorist victims. They bribed police. James Murdoch may have paid hush money.

Murdoch’s management may not have revealed details of crimes to authorities. They may have deliberately lied about possible crimes.

The Murdoch power saw politicians appoint former senior Murdoch officials, despite knowledge of their past, to positions of power within their inner circle. This closeness and influence is not democracy. It is another example of a corrupt plutocracy.

This closeness and influence is not confined to the UK. It is true in Australia too. The relationship between the Coalition and the Murdoch papers needs investigation. But Labor is not immune.

The Murdoch papers in Australia have run a virulent anti-Labor and energetic pro-Coalition line. This makes Labor at the moment wary of these reactionary rags, it didn’t stop Gillard visiting Murdoch in the US on a recent visit there. It doesn’t stop ex-ALP heavies writing for them.

And it didn’t stop Murdoch appointing Tom Mockridge as head of news International to replace Rebeka Brooks. In 1991 Mockridge was the press officer to then Treasurer and later Prime Minister Paul Keating.   Murdoch snapped him up.

The political liars for capitalism are in bed with the media liars for capitalism. Surprise surprise.

Truculent, aren’t they? After cornering Gillard, even she turned on them, but they get worse by the second, because they could also lose control of the asylum seeker and carbon policy issues. Noise to substitute for substance.
I think Columbus just slipped off the edge of the flat earth with the crowning glory of this week; Murdoch’s problems as a socialist plot in the oz!
Rib-tickling for us, isn’t it a bit sad that this sort of effort to keep the world as 1970, is so diametrically opposed to any rationality, kinetic or dynamic and so antagonistic to consciousness AND bad taste.
