Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

The one percent just don’t get it

‘Let them eat cake’ has a couple of variants courtesy of today’s bloated rich pigs.

‘Work harder; get a job;  increase productivity; cut wages; bludgers’ all come to mind.

The most revealing image so far for me is of some bank executives drinking champagne and toasting their fellow Americans far below as the Occupy Wall street demonstrators walked past.

They are so divorced from the lives of ordinary working people that they cannot see the possible threat the movement presents to them. Ignorant, completely pig ignorant.

The old ways cannot continue and the fools continue the old ways.

Who can touch these arrogant born to rule bastards? Well, actually we can. We could cut off the flow of our profits to them tomorrow if we wanted to.  There lies the future for any successful fight against the one percent.

And haven’t the media mendicants and the popinjay publishers been wonderful? First they ignored the  protestors, then they rubbished them and now some of them, still a small minority, have begun to take the Occupiers seriously.

For example, today the Australian Financial Review ran an interesting piece by keynesian economist John Quiggin arguing that it was wrong for the bourgeoisie to ignore the demonstrators and their message. It also ran a letter from me on Monday. I said:

Deirdre Macken is wrong to argue that the Occupy Wall Street protesters and those taking up the battle in other countries, including Sydney and Melbourne from 15 October, do not have a focus for their anger. (‘Protesters don’t know who to blame’ The Weekend Australian Financial Review  8-9 October 2011 p 62). While her message of demonstrator confusion might be of comfort to the ruling elite who read the AFR, it is that elite the protesters blame.

Clearly any movement that sees the ‘one percent’ as the problem has a class understanding of society. ‘Make the bosses pay’ is simple enough to comprehend. The movement is spreading like wildfire precisely because that message resonates with so many working people after so many years of the bosses making us pay for their rotten system and its crimes.

This is a movement of the working class and the oppressed, of those who feel powerless in the face of a machine that shifts the wealth they create to the small rich minority, makes them work longer and longer hours, spits them onto the garbage tip of unemployment, cuts their wages, takes their homes, abandons them when they are sick and sends them to fight its wars against defenceless nations and to kill innocent people.

The movement is against the way the ruling elites’ world is today; it is against its poverty, its racism, its unemployment, its wars, its environmental destruction. It is a movement against the greed and inequality of the bosses. It is a movement of hope for a better world.

The politicians of profit have been true to form too. The Democrats in the US have tried to co-opt the movement, recognising the real concerns of the protestors. it is bullshit. The Democrats rule for the one percent. The Republicans  just want to smash the movement.

If the movement takes off in Australia then we can expect the same here. The Labor Party might mouth platitudes but we need to remember that they too rule for the one percent.  They are part of the problem, not the solution.

There will be occupations in cities across Australia and the globe from 15 October. Join us in the struggle of the vast majority against the tiny minority who rule over us.
