Saturday’s socialist speak out

So Gillard Labor has an extra vote in Parliament thanks to putting the Slipper into Abbott.  This means it has more leeway now to introduce the bosses’ agenda; more ‘flexible’ industrial relations laws (code for further restricting workers and unions); slashing social spending; boosting defence spending; establishing closer and closer ties with the US while keeping the cash cow that is China on side (a difficult task).

Labor wallows in the quagmire of defeat that is Afghanistan.

Labor will obey the bosses and attempt to implement its version of the neoliberal vision.

The leadership of Victorian nurses seem to have backed down and lifted some industrial action, despite a clear directive from members at the last mass meeting not to do so unless approved by members.

The leadership have got nothing concrete in return. It looks as if the officials have snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Now it looks as if the nurses will have their pay docked and Fair Work Australia is investigating the unions’ possible breaches of orders to lift bans. It has also tightened up the orders to lift bans so they apply to union members.

The ruling class is going on the offensive against nurses. Now is not the time to cave it. It is the time to fight.

If rank and file nurses reclaim the campaign from the trade union bureaucrats they can win. If not the likely result is a half way house of wage increases paid for out of screwing more out of nurses – e.g. some tawdry deal on nurse/patient ratios.

And massive fines on the union and perhaps members. The union can beat this. Don’t give in. Fight.

In Egypt the Mubarak regime’s military leaders announced a new Prime Minister – Kamal al-Ganzuri, 78, a premier under former president Hosni Mubarak.  The old regime is dead but it fights to retain its power and position. ‘Whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.’

The latest reports are that the demonstrators or some of them are calling for a government of national salvation with Mohamed ElBaradei as leader. As I learn more I will update what is happening.

In West Papua Indonesian troops continue their brutal repression of the struggle for freedom there, with the agreement and support of the Australian ruling class.

In Europe the debt crisis looks as if it is beginning to spread into Germany, the key economy in European imperialism’s unity project.
