Slip sliding away: a eulogy for Gillard Labor?

The Slipper scandal will drag on for a while. Labor could well survive with his support and that of Craig Thomson till an election in 2013. Then they will get annihilated because of the Slipper syndrome, power without principle, rule for the rich.

Maybe we could find a more fitting eulogy. How does this sound? This is the way Labor’s world ends, this is the way their world ends, this is the way their world ends, not with a bang but a slipper. Labor are indeed the hollow men and women.

Saturday’s socialist speak out

Right wing columnist Andrew Bolt has called me one of ‘Breivik’s useful idiots’ for writing in an article in July last year on my blog that ‘There is little in the political concerns of right-wing terrorist Anders Breivik that would be out of place in Coalition Party meetings or the mainstream media and especially on the shock jock radio shows.’ It comes from an article I wrote last year which asked ‘Is Anders Breivik just John Howard with a gun?’

I have been Andrew Bolted yet again

According to Andrew Bolt yesterday I am one of ‘Breivik’s useful idiots’ for daring to suggest in an article in July last year on my blog that ‘There is little in the political concerns of right-wing terrorist Anders Breivik that would be out of place in Coalition Party meetings or the mainstream media and especially […]

End business entitlements instead, Hockey

To stop the Liberal barbarians in the distance we have to stop the Labor barbarians at the gate.

A letter The Australian hasn’t published (yet?)

I suspect Mick Armstrong would be surprised to learn he is now in Socialist Alliance (‘As for Bob Brown, Laurie Oakes and the Socialist Alliance, the differences are wafer thin’ Cut & Paste, The Australian Monday April 16).  So in the interests of accuracy – a topic my good friend at Cut and Paste pillories the Fairfax Press about when they […]

Cut & Paste hatchet job?

Someone has been reading the very old cricket articles on my blog for inordinately long periods of time. I suspect Cut and Paste is annoyed I criticised them for inaccuracy in a recent unpublished letter and is going to try to do a hatchet job on me soon in The Australian.

Afghanistan: the disguised defeat

The defeat of Australia in Afghanistan won’t be identified as such but after more than a decade what does the Australian ruling class have to show other than 32 dead Australian soldiers and many more Afghan civilians? Nothing, except continuing the close relationship with US imperialism.

War is integral to capitalism and the battle between competing blocks for dominance. Ending war means ending the system that creates it. One step in that direction is to campaign against the wars the Australian ruling class involves itself in.

Brown leaves the Greens with a dilemma

Bob Brown has left a party that is, despite appearances and proclamations to the contrary, in a crisis of sorts writes Ben Hillier in Socialist Alternative. The crisis of the Greens relates to their own vision and their capacity to go anywhere but backwards. The party Brown now leaves behind (not withstanding the notable exceptions of some left wing Greens who still attempt to provide some alternative vision to the mainstream) is a party thoroughly integrated into mainstream political life. This is the crux of the issue. And arguably, it relies primarily not on its own capacities, but on the failings of the ALP, and on the perception that Labor is, historically, finished.

Oh what a f****d feeling Toyota

The mass sackings at Toyota show yet again the absolute bankruptcy of capitalism as a way to organise production. They also show the need to fight for jobs, to follow the lead of the Baiada poultry workers and strike and picket and if needed go that extra step and occupy the workplace to win.

The case against Israel

The only just solution in Palestine is to have one democratic state that offers equal rights for Arabs and Jews, and the right for Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland. Achieving this “one state solution” would require dismantling the racist apartheid state of Israel and breaking the power of US imperialism in the region. But it is the only way Palestine can be free.
