Of penises and priests, placards and protestors

The State and capital will attack the Other – whether it be indigenous Australians, Muslims or refugees – for their own benefit. They will not investigate one of their own, in this case the Catholic Church over child abuse, unless there is real pressure from below to do so.

A bad conscience on marriage equality

For marriage equality campaigners the conclusion has to be that changing public opinion, changing the ALP’s platform and lobbying MPs are not strategies that alone will force the Gillard government to change its policy. We must continue the public pressure brought about by mass demonstrations – an important feature of the marriage equality campaign to date – and force the issue again into the spotlight in Canberra.

Saturday’s socialist speak out

It’s not really about the video. The video is just the spark for a deep seated hatred of America.

Why do they hate us? If you have to ask the question it shows you are not even in the game.

The US has invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, with over one million non-combatants dead as a consequence. It threatens Iran. Its puppet dictators quash dissent. Until recently Mubarak was like one of Hillary Clinton’s family. Her words, not mine.

Drone bombs in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and elsewhere rain down death on innocent women and children.

I’m not ready to make nice

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time
To go round and round and round

Québec students win a great victory

Québec students organised and fought. They mobilised. They struck. They picketed. They demonstrated. They won. As the neoliberal project intensifies its attacks on higher education, there may be a lesson there for students and staff at Universities around the globe, including Australia.

Equal love can win if we increase the pressure even more

The vote in Federal Parliament against marriage equality shows not that the movement has failed but that it has not yet won the final battle. The fact that equal love is only on the agenda because of grass roots activism shows the way forward. Build the campaign. Make it stronger and bigger and louder.

Protest cancelled

From Corey Oakley, a member of Socialist Alternative’s National Executive: There have been reports in the media and comments online implying that Socialist Alternative was backing the now-cancelled protest that was planned for this Sunday. This is not the case. Socialist Alternative was very much opposed to calling a protest in the current climate of […]

Ignorance on parade: Islamophobia, Left and Right

Those who call themselves progressive might note that a certain Karl Marx followed the Great Indian Rebellion closely. While he acknowledged and decried the excesses of the rebels, he declared these were ‘only the reflex, in a concentrated form, of England’s own conduct in India.’

In other words, Marx, one of history’s more famous atheists, stood firmly with the ‘ignorant’ sepoys against their ‘enlightened’ opponents.

Animal husbandry

Maybe Cory Bernardi should be the Minister for Animal Husbandry in an Abbott Government.

Evidently right wing hate is OK

Let me be disrespectful and disparaging. After the revolution Alan Jones will be made to clean toilets. It shouldn’t be too much of a change for him. After all he deals in horseshit every day. The other end of the chaff bag you might say. The right wallows in hate; the currency of the Left is hope.
