Voting for Labor as the lesser evil

Let’s move beyond this fake ‘they’ll be worse than us’ debate. Labor is just another party of neoliberalism and its warmongering and years of attacks on workers, the poor and refugees have opened the door for Abbott to do the same.

Franking credits and paid parental leave

Some at least of Abbott’s paid parental leave scheme will be paid for by the reduction in franking credits, and thus reducing superannuation fund returns and those of mum and dad investors

Labor paves the way for Tony Abbott as Prime Minister

The result of Labor’s fawning over big business while in office isn’t just the disappointment of its working class and progressive supporters. The ALP has pushed the political atmosphere to the right, making it easier for conservative and downright reactionary ideas to get a hearing. It has paved the way for an even more right wing anti-working class Liberal government.

The West Papua freedom flotilla

The Freedom Flotilla aims to draw the attention of the world to the repression of the people of West Papua and their legitimate demands for self-determination and independence.

A Letter to Comrades from the Revolutionary Socialists of Egypt, 15 August 2013

Down with military rule … no to the return of the old regime … no to the return of the Brotherhood

The decline and fall of the Labor Party?

A shit sandwich is still a shit sandwich no matter whether it is Gillard or Rudd trying to sell it to us. Of course Abbott is not pointing out the obvious – that he too is offering us a shit sandwich. It is just that his shit sandwich is horse shit, not cow poo.

Twiggy Forrest and Aboriginal employment

Fortescue Metals Group hasn’t paid income tax in Australia for 18 years and given accumulated losses will celebrate a twenty year anniversary of not making a revenue contribution to Commonwealth coffers in a few years time.

Andrew Forrest is just so right for being given $45 million of workers’ money to do nothing about Aboriginal employment.

Land rights and sovereignty and negotiating a treaty with indigenous Australians – in other words empowerment – would help address the issue of unemployment, rather than putting the head of a non-tax paying entity in charge of a do nothing scheme.

State capitalism and the self-emancipation of the working class

The self-emancipation of the working class and the theory of state capitalism remain at the centre of my politics, my thinking and my activity.

Saturday’s socialist speak out

As a colonial settler state Australia’s ruling class has always vilified the ‘other’ in an attempt to unify Australian workers with their bosses, undermine their solidarity and keep wages down. At various time the targets of vilification have been the Irish, the reds, the Chinese, the Russians, Muslims…

Of late it is asylum seekers, although Australia has form on this barbarity in its demonisation and rejection of refugees in the 1930s.

And always indigenous peoples- the internal other – are a target.

The Northern Territory as a tax haven

As a tax man I have been thinking about Kevin Rudd’s idea to cut company tax in the Northern Territory to 20%.

Let me tell you a story about profit shifting, or transfer pricing as it is known in tax circles.
