Saturday’s socialist speak out

The IPCC is clear. Climate change is real. It is a result of human activity (read capitalism and the way production for profit is organised.) The time to act is now; not the irrelevant discourse of a price on carbon or direct action that the parties of neoliberalism sprout but a real globally focussed program of action to address the existential threat to humanity and, for those short term profiteers, capitalism itself. It looks to me that only a democratic planned economy based on satisfying human need can do that. That is socialism.

In Australia the new Abbott government’s direct action plan for addressing climate change is a sup – a pretence of action by climate change sceptics.

The outline of the Abbott government is becoming clearer: nasty and brutish, and hopefully short. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has ignored questions from journalists about an asylum seeker boat which sank, drowning 22 people. Stop reporting the boats is their strategy. It can’t work since even News ‘journalists’ will report refugee boats attempting to come to Australia.

These blunderbusses have already alienated the Indonesians. The Coalition’s lies about stopping the boats are being exposed every day. They may try to become even more reactionary and perhaps begin anti-Indonesian rhetoric, especially about Australia’s sovereignty and land ownership.

Education attack dog Christopher Pyne tried to flag abolishing the university student amenities fee but backed down after student, University and National Party complaints. It only took a week for the Government to reverse a pre-election commitment.

Pyne will be more circumspect in future in his underhand attacks on all levels of education spending.

The Conservatives have also postponed the release of economic figures until January. The emergency has been postponed, evidently. Or maybe someone in Treasury is trying to expalin the economy to Abbott and Hockey.

Barack Obama, the world’s most powerful war criminal, told the UN that the US would attack whoever it wanted to. Situation normal for US imperialism, tempered of course only by real politic.
