Me quoted in Fairfax papers on tax haven use
Me quoted by Georgia Wilkins in The Age (and other Fairfax publications) today. John Passant, from the school of political science and international relations, at the Australian National University, said the trend noted by Computershare was further evidence multinationals did not take global regulators seriously. ”US companies are doing this on the hard-nosed basis that any [regulatory] changes that will be made won’t have an impact on their ability to avoid tax,” he said. ”They think it is going to take a long time for the G20 to take action, or that they are just all talk.” (1)

Saturday’s socialist speak out

I’ll leave it up to readers today to comment on whatever is on their mind, within reason. The march in March, Sinodinos, missing aeroplanes, Crimea, Russia and Ukraine, Manus Island, Reza Berati, Syria, the non-existent Opposition, the forthcoming WA Senate election, the Budget in May … whatever. Go for it.

As Colin Powell’s fake UN speech demonstrated – the West will launch huge false claims to aid and abet NATO and OECD expansion. As demonstrated by Andrew Wilkie elements in Australian public service will fabricate presentations to politicians to obtain American desired outcomes.

With Ukraine the West claims that the separation of the Russian region of Ukraine is illegal. However when the Albanian region was separated from Serbia, for the same reasons, the legal issues were adjudicated by the International Court of Justice.

The parliament of Kosovo region declared independence on 17 February 2008.

Scotland is also feeling needs to separate from the UK.

In then case of Kosovo, the Yankees argued:

The United States invites the International Court of Justice to leave the declaration of independence intact as an expression of the will of the people of Kosovo, either by refusing to comment on its legality, or by determining that the international law does not prohibit declarations of independence. The declaration of independence did not violate any principle of territorial integrity because under international law, only states must comply with this principle, and not internal entities.

Russia opposed the principle of such separation, but the Court advised otherwise.

Russia argued that:

General international law prevents Kosovo from declaring independence, bearing in mind that the people of Kosovo do not enjoy a right to self-determination….Russia reminds that the UN Security Council declared Northern Cyprus and Rhodesia’s independence to be illegal,

Putin said:

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated, “Our position is extremely clear. Any resolution on Kosovo should be approved by both sides. It is also clear that any resolution on Kosovo will definitely set a precedent in international practice.”

It would be interesting to see what departmental briefing principles and proposals for sanctions were fed to the Australian government when Indonesia absorbed West PNG and then absorbed East Timor.

Looks like both the US and Russia have changed their minds! In both cases, Kosovo and Crimea, self interest is involved. What’s new? The world is full of self interest and hypocrisy. Russia and the US are the same in that regard. But you have highlighted some useful recent history here.
