No nuclear waste dump for Muckaty Station

Plans to develop Australia’s first nuclear waste dump at Muckaty Station in the Northern Territory have been shelved, writes Cathy Lewis in Red Flag. The decision is a significant victory for traditional owners and serves as a powerful demonstration that communities who stand united and strong, can fight back and win.

Refugees: a comradely letter to left-wing Labor Party members and supporters

This is not about saying join this or that socialist group although I do think groups like Socialist Alternative are worth having a look at. It is about asking Labor members and supporters who want to understand the degeneration of their party to do so in the context of its managerial role in Australian capitalism and to see that degeneration as part and parcel of that role.

Is this what democracy looks like?

Australian politicians and media commentators – Liberal and Labor, conservative and liberal alike – love telling us about their democracy and how great it is writes Ben Hillier in Red Flag. The thing is, they seem to be turning people off it.

Why is Iraq being torn apart?

Ashley Smith in Socialist Worker US provides the essential background for understanding Iraq’s crisis. As Iraq’s descent into chaos and conflict proves once again, the U.S. and its imperial rivals are part of the problem, not the solution.

We workers create the wealth Hockey and Abbott are redistributing to the rich

Where does all this income – profits, rents, dividends, interest, wages etc – and the taxes imposed on it, come from? It is the wealth (or more precisely, in Marxist terms, the surplus value) we workers create that we are talking about. It is ours. We should decide where it goes, not the parliamentary popinjays of profit.

A world cup for the rich in Brazil

Big sporting events are designed to build government popularity and create a sense of social and national cohesion writes Joel Windle in Red Flag. Brazil’s hosting of the World Cup has instead exposed both the country’s deep class divisions and the private interests served by those in power.

Saturday’s socialist speak out

Unionists across Australia should be clogging up the arteries of their sclerotic union bureaucracies demanding a 24 hour nationwide strike as the first step in busting the budget. We should make the same demand at the 6 July rallies. If that doesn’t happen then we should organise these actions in our unions without our ‘leaders’.

France in 2014: The need for a united fight against the fascists.

At the end of May, the Front National results in the European elections sent a shock wave across France, John Mullen writes from Paris. Here we look at the causes of this disaster, and at what can be done

Busting the Budget in Melbourne – where to now?

Their side is serious and on the attack. It is time our side got serious too. We won’t beat back these attacks by one-off rallies or even stopworks of a few hours. The way to beat this bosses’ Budget is to stop work until the government capitulates or falls.

New Matilda exposes the back story to the lies that led to the Northern Territory Intervention

But what was so stunning about it was that sitting right next to Kunoth-Monks was one of the chief perpetrators – and subsequent defenders – of that “lie”.

For the uninitiated, Tony Jones was once the full-time host of ABC Lateline, a late night ABC current affairs program that broadcast the story Kunoth-Monks is specifically referring to.

Here is the link to Chris Graham’s New Matilda article Without the Back Story, Q&A bombshell goes begging.
