Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

The road to Jerusalem runs through Cairo

I don’t think it is an accident that with US supported dictator al-Sisi consolidating his power in Egypt and attempting somewhat successfully to destroy all Opposition the Israelis feel secure in bombing Gaza and preparing to invade.

The road to Jerusalem runs through Cairo. The liberation of Palestine depends on the revolution in Egypt. The counter-revolution is in power now, and probably in charge. However we had glimpses during the overthrow of Mubarak of the one social power that can overthrow reaction and lead and force the revolution to its logical end.

That one social power is the Egyptian working class and the logical end is socialism, where workers organise production democratically to satisfy human need.

The Palestinian working class in Israel and outside it does not have the social weight to overthrow the Israeli state. The Israeli working class is almost thoroughly Zionist.

Workers in Egypt do have the power to overthrow their own corrupt and reactionary dictatorship.  It is that possibility that offers the ultimate hope for the region and for the liberation of all of Palestine and all of its peoples – Jews, Arabs, Christians, atheists and the rest alike.

A democratic and secular Palestine is only possible, in my view, if there is a working class revolution in Egypt showing the way for democracy and peace and setting the Arab masses  across the region alight.

Such an outcome is not immediately on the cards, although in times of such tumult in the region one can never completely rule out the old mole of revolution breaking out.

Whatever happens we on the left must support the oppressed against the oppressor. That means standing with the Palestinians in their struggle against Zionism, much as I did today (Sunday) in front of Parliament House in Canberra with 250 other protesters, a good turnout considering it was organised in a day.

Part of the 250 strong Canberra protest for Palestine. There will be another one next Saturday 19 July from noon in Petrie Plaza in Civic.

We will not be silenced in our support for Palestinians as they suffer the latest round of Israeli attacks.
