John Mullen: In Paris at the vigil after the attack on Charlie Hebdo

John Mullen went to the vigil in La Place de la Republique and reflects on the murder of the journalists and others and on the nature of Charlie Hebdo.

He finishes off with this:

Of course I could never chant “I am Charlie” because I think its role was so horribly negative (and indeed tragic, because some of France’s best cartoonists got pulled into this awful project). But I was happy to go to a vigil for my fellow activist against education cuts. I wish he was still alive so I could tell him to leave the islamophobic rag and do something better (tho I haven’t seen islamophobic cartoons by this particular cartoonist). Over the next few weeks the radical and anticapitalist Left here has to be active against the uses that will be made of this tragedy by the islamophobes and fascists, and by the state looking to limit our freedoms.

You can read the rest of his comment at his blog John Mullen à Montreuil -Blog anticapitaliste.

French society has contributed greatly to what Edward Said (no relation) describes as Orientalism, a portrayal of people from the Middle East as inherently having characteristics that somehow invite or cause lesser treatment and respect. In this context, cynical or lampooning portrayals of Islam and its followers cannot be benign: these portrayals can only add to the put down and stigma experienced by immigrants, and can only add to perceptions that the influence of Islam is something to be stamped out through legal restrictions and military force. Of course this is, in no way, a justification for any act of violence, nor is it a justification for restrictions on freedom of the press. But this is something for concerned people to think about when considering how to build more positive and harmonious relationships between ethnic groups and nations.

Here is evidence that this was just another false flag event. See what MSM has edited out. Cop lies on the pavement apparently wounded but no blood evident. Gunman runs past shooting at point black range. Bullet misses and smoke hits the pavement in front of his head. No blood ,no head damage to the cop, no recoil from the gun and no mark on the pavement from this assault weapon. Looks like a blank bullet.

Gunmen flee in car leaving behind their ID for police to find. Reminds me of the 911 passports that survived intense fire while all the bodies in those planes were burnt to a crisp.

This bullshit about the dead cop has been debunked. Conspiracy theorists have nothing to add to our knowledge. I have better things to do with my time than ‘debate’ this nonsense, Ross.

You’ll like this one John. John Howard to face criminal charges for war crimes.http://theaimn.com/complaint-john-howard-international-criminal-court/

The International Criminal Court now has jurisdiction over war crimes and crimes against humanity … It attributes criminal responsibility to individuals responsible for planning military action that violates international humanitarian law and those who carried it out. It specifically extends criminal liability to heads of state, leaders of governments, parliamentarians, government officials and military personnel.”

The Australian Government, led by Mr. Howard, defied legal opinion. Parliament was adjourned on 8 March 2003. In the late hours of 17 March 2003, Mr. Howard and his Cabinet voted to authorise Australian air, land and naval personnel to attack Iraq. US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Armitage made an official request for the involvement of Australian troops late on the night of March 20. It later became known that Australian special operations troops, with Cabinet authorisation, had entered Iraq as much as 30 hours before the outbreak of war.”

In other words Howard authorised attacks before the outbreak of war which is illegal.

Howard is safe. As are Bush and Blair, Obama and Rudd.

Why then does the NY times ask for the prosecution of war criminals George Bush and Dick Cheney for crimes of torture? http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/22/opinion/prosecute-torturers-and-their-bosses.html?_r=0

Are the elites trying to appease the masses with more BS ?

They call for an investigation, not a prosecution, and one that includes Cheney. They do not specifically mention Bush although they allude to him. Sometimes even the bourgeoisie believe their own morality and legalisms. And it makes good practical sense both geopolitically and locally to try and defend US ‘exceptionalism’ as the defender of human rights rather than their abuser.
