In the October edition of socialist magazine Solidarity, James Supple writes about the situation in Syria. He says in part:
‘We should oppose Russian, US and Australian bombing as well as all forms of foreign imperialist intervention.’
Later on he argues:
‘Assad is no lesser evil to Islamic State and similar rebel groups like the Al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al Nusra. Like IS, the Assad regime also ruthlessly represses any political dissent, has targeted ethnic minorities and is waging sectarian war.
‘The solution to the nightmare in Syria can only come through a revival of the democratic movement that erupted in 2011.’

As Independent Australia says: With Vladimir Putin’s Russia carrying out air strikes in Syria, John Passant reposts in En Passant an excellent explanation of the backdrop to the conflict and consequences of this new stage in the violence by Eric Ruder from Socialist Worker, US.

I went along to the protest for the Syrian revolution and democracy at the Russian Embassy in Canberra on Thursday. Here is a one photo of part of the crowd of about 80 Syrians and Syrian Australians. They asked me to speak and I expressed support for the democratic struggle against the butcher Assad and for democracy and to stop the bombing. Victory to the Syrian revolution. Victory to the Syrian people. Victory to democracy. More photos in the link.
