Cutting penalty rates – a summary in all their richness

The Productivity Commission: Men on $400,000 a year telling women on $40,000 that penalty rates are bad. Liberal and National Party politicians on from $200,000 to $550,000 supporting the Productivity Commission. Men or women earning more than $400 billion from Australia and paying no tax supporting and pushing for these cuts in pay to women and men on $40,000 or less.

Marx and taxing economic rent

This is very much a draft paper. I argue that taxing resource rents in Australia involves a battle between the state in its Commonwealth and State and Territory variations as landlord and mining capital as both a new landlord and exploiter of the land and the minerals therein. That battle is over the share of the economic rent which mining capital extracts from other capital in the process of distribution of the profit or more correctly surplus value arising in production.

Do corporate tax avoiders also mistreat their staff?

Is there a correlation between mistreating staff and avoiding tax? Between profiting from people’s misery and tax avoidance? Read my report in Independent Australia today (Monday) to find out. Click here. Big business tax watch: Do corporate tax avoiders also mistreat their staff?

What is socialism and where will it come from?

What is socialism and where will it come from? What we mean by socialism is bound up with the questions of how we think a new society can be achieved–and who can achieve it. Alan Maass explains why in Socialist Worker US.

This is the link to my article in today’s Independent Australia (Thursday 17 December). I examine the Government’s MYEFO and discover Abbott’s budget cuts have been repackaged and presented by “a silver-tongued leader”. To read the article click here. MYEFO – Abbott’s cut’s repackaged.

Police on building sites

How then can we improve safety on building sites? Give the CFMEU and other building unions the power to police safety standards. Police could also prosecute company directors for deaths and serious injuries at work instead of conducting political with hunts against unions. Deaths and serious injuries would fall. This of course won’t happen because we live in a society which puts profit before people, which prioritises loot over lives.

Donald Trump: Why does anyone support this racist arsehole?

Elizabeth Schulte in Socialist Worker US examines the basis of Donald Trump’s ongoing political popularity. “If I win the election for president, we are going to Make America Great Again.” Trump does want to “Make America” something. But I think the word he was looking for rhymes with “great.” Try “hate”.
