ANU’s ‘Western Civilisation’ decision: A festival of reaction for the rabid right

In Independent Australia I discuss whether ANU’s rejection of the Ramsay Centre’s proposal is evidence that it has sacrificed Western civilisation on the ‘Altar of Leftist Warriors’.

Dear Tim, Free Speech Commissioner

This is a slightly edited version of a letter I have emailed to Tim Wilson, the right wing libertarian Free Speech Commissioner at the Human Rights Commission over the refusal by the Australian National University student newspaper Woroni to publish any rebuttal by me of their outrageous article ‘convicting’ Socialist Alternative of anti-Semitism. What odds eh?

The article the ANU student ‘newspaper’ Woroni refused to publish

This is an updated version of an article I sent to to the editors of Woroni, the student newspaper of the Australian National University. They refused to publish an earlier version of what is written below. I have submitted a cut down version of this to the Canberra Times for their consideration.

Canberra Times ignores hundreds of Uni students protesting against cuts

Local labor member and former ANU Professor Andrew Leigh, in justifying Labor’s massive higher education cuts to the large group of student protesters, fell back on that old furphy that things would be worse under Abbott. That’s like the python who is squeezing us to death warning us to beware of the tiger lurking nearby. In fact Labor’s attacks lay the groundwork for possible attacks by the Liberals in the future. Such is the degeneration of the ALP that the Liberals agree with Labor’s current cuts to higher education. The way to fight Abbott’s neoliberalism is to fight Gillard and Leigh’s neoliberalism.

Québec student strike leader to speak at ANU

Last semester in Québec more than 150,000 university students went on strike against tuition fee hikes. When the provincial government criminalised these and other protests 300,000 demonstrated against their action and for students. As Vice-Chancellor after Vice-Chancellor in Australia attacks staff, students and courses, including here in the ACT, there may be lessons from the […]

Resisting the neoliberalisation of universities

As the experience in other countries shows, university staff and students can and have fought back against neoliberalism and the commodification of education. It is a lesson students and staff at Australian universities are going to have to learn if we want to stop the rule of the educational barbarians and the horrific consequences that flow and will flow from their ascendancy.

Defend the ANU School of Music; save the University

This union meeting on Monday will provide us the opportunity to consider what significant industrial action is now required to support our colleagues in the School of Music and all the other areas that are now clearly on Vice-Chancellor Ian Young’s economic rationalist hit-list.

One thousand rally against School of Music sackings at ANU

Nearly one thousand students, staff and members of the Canberra arts community gathered in Union Court today to protest proposed staff cuts and curriculum changes at the Australian National University School of Music writes Nakul Legha in the ANU student newspaper Woroni.

Music School sackings just the start of ANU VC’s assault

The first step is for a large turnout to rallies, campaign committee and general meetings. We can spread the word about the seriousness of the situation as widely as possible and get as many people as possible to the protest next week and to the general NTEU (union) meeting when it occurs. From there we can plan a stop work meeting and prepare the ground for a campaign of industrial action.

Sackings at the Australian National University

The time to fight back against the cutters and destroyers of quality education is now. For students that means mass meetings and rallies and whatever may come out of that. For staff it means strikes. Stop work to save jobs. Stop work for quality education. Stop work to stop Vice- Chancellor Young.
