The immediate question for the left and for activists, Chavez supporters or not, is the need to rebuild organisations on the ground that will be able to act independently of their rulers, whoever they are. Such organisation would enable the Venezuelan masses to defend their own class interests—and to deepen a revolution that still has far to go.

Morales’ words and actions are a clear example of the logic of reformism; the logic of attempting to reform a capitalist state. He is constrained by the needs of a capitalist economy, and as such, has moved against the working class.

The Cochabamba Accord is an astonishing document. It calls for radical cuts in carbon dioxide emissions, no market solutions, and an end to capitalism.
