Archive for 'Chris Jordan'

Is it time for the Senate to consider jailing the Treasurer and the Commissioner of Taxation?

Given that both Joe Hockey and Chris Jordan are possibly undermining the work of the Senate and this committee by not providing the names of the tax rorters, and supporting that decision, the question has to be asked: Are the Treasurer and the Commissioner of Taxation in contempt of the Senate and the Committee? If so, why aren’t their actions being investigated with a view to prosecution?

Neoliberalism and the destruction of the Australian Tax Office

The outcome of neoliberal policy since 1983, when Hawke Labor began implementing it and laid out the red carpet for Howard and then Abbott, has been a massive shift in wealth in Australia from labour to capital. The process of neoliberal regulatory capture in tax policy and tax law has now, if Second Commissioner Mills’ speech is any indication, also successfully infected the administration of the Australian Tax Office. All the sweet words in the world will not disguise the fact that the fox is now in charge of the revenue hen house.

Tax cheats and union ‘corruption’

Why is there no royal commission into corrupt business people and their companies cheating on their tax? Could it be because they are rich and powerful?

It’s the Tax Office the Australian left should be worried about

This may be the logic. Trickle down will increase revenue. The less tax we collect today from companies will magically produce more economic activity in the future. So having people in charge of the Australian Tax Office who ‘understand’ business and the realities they face is just what capital needs. To business, tax is just another cost and the lower the costs the higher the profit and the better off all of us will be

I believe in Santa Claus too.

The new Commissioner of Taxation – a reprise

Has newly appointed Commissioner of Taxation Chris Jordan been involved in tax avoidance arrangements for his clients or even himself? Will he, for example, release his tax returns for the last ten years?

Is the new Commissioner of Taxation fox or gamekeeper?

Such is Labor’s degeneration they have handed the tax collecting role to a person whose whole working life has been representing the interests of big business in general in policy debates and discussions and defending specific big businesses when battling the ATO. Jordan would almost certainly be someone who has undertaken tax planning for his big business clients and the rich. One has to wonder if he has been involved in tax avoidance schemes. Neoliberal madness.
