Martin Luther King – oppressed and oppressors

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.

The Magna Carta 800 years on – taking liberties with history

Ken Olende in Socialist Worker UK cuts through our rulers’ attempts to spin the Magna Carta as the basis of democratic rights in Britain

Evidently the ANZACs died for free speech, except at SBS

McIntyre was telling his version of the truth, a version much closer to reality than the war porn about ANZAC Day the Australian ruling class has force fed us over the last week. Sacking McIntyre explodes the lies of the ruling class that our participation in this imperialist war was about defending freedom and democracy then and now.

Proposed anti-terror laws attack basic freedoms

Planned changes to anti-terror laws outlined by Tony Abbott and George Brandis on 5 August amount to a staggering new attack on basic civil rights writes Corey Oakley in Red Flag.

Peter Greste and the not so innocent state in both Egypt and Australia

Of course the conviction of Peter Greste is a travesty of justice. So too are Aboriginal deaths in custody, imprisoning innocent asylum seekers and their children in concentration camps, criminalising dissent, fining or jailing workers for ‘illegal’ strikes and imprisoning Aboriginal peoples on their own lands.

The fight for justice in Australia is the fight against the same sort of forces imprisoning Peter Greste in Egypt. Our fight against injustice here is the fight against injustice everywhere. Peter Greste’s struggle is our struggle. The best way for Australians to support Greste is to fight for justice and freedom here in Australia.

George Brandis and his freedom commissars

To make sense of the zeal of George Brandis for certain types of freedoms we need to judge them through the prism of class. Brandis’s freedoms will directly or indirectly assist the ruling class in its ongoing campaign to justify itself and reinforce its barbaric and exploitative rule. His proposed freedom commissars will strengthen the dictatorship of capital.

First they came for the bikies

The Abbott Liberal Government and its State counterparts will ratchet up their strategy of vilification and demonisation against the powerless, the poor, refugees, bikies, indigenous Australians. This lays the groundwork for turning on social welfare recipients – so called dole bludgers and the like – and then on to the defensive organisations of labour, unions. They will ramp up the rhetoric of union thugs and attacks on unions.

An injury to one is an injury to all. To keep and improve current pay, conditions and jobs we will have to fight back against reaction, against all demonisation and vilification, against attacks on unions. If there is hope it lies in the proles.

Some freedoms are more important than others, evidently

Hate speech is an important part of the armoury of control of the ruling class.

Youth unemployment might be 50% in inner Western Sydney suburbs but all is well because we can vilify refugees. In fact it isn’t, but the externalisation of hate diverts inchoate anger with the system towards the most powerless in society, people such as refugees.

Lenin, democracy and the way forward for the Left

Lenin’s position was the exact opposite of the academic caricature. He was one of history’s greatest champions of human freedom.

Jackboot junkies and bikie gangs

The ABCC; the ‘bikie gang’ laws; anti-terrorism laws; the loss of habeas corpus – the ruling class jackboots are stirring.
