The real face of terrorism in Australia

Our first response must be to defend Kurdish Australian journalist Renas Lelikan. Our second response must be to try to build a mass movement against the normalisation of racism and right wing terrorism, driven by the State and the media, in Australian society today.

Is there a solution to Daesh and its massacres?

Richard Seymour in Salvage asks the question ‘What is your solution, then? Or, to put it another way, what if there is no solution to the Daesh massacres?’ Part of his conclusion is that ‘the unwelcome thought begins to insinuate itself — we are going to live in a world with Daesh and its massacres no matter what we do.’

White Christian terrorists in the US

Australia’s Grand Mufti is right

Invading Iraq and killing up to 1.5 m Iraqis was, as we pointed out in our demonstrations against the Iraq War in 2003, always going to produce a backlash. It has, and this mirror of Western barbarity called ISIS is now wreaking some destruction in the West, although its main victims remain Muslims in Iraq and Syria. Far from being condemned, the Grand Mufti of Australia deserves our support for pointing out some of the Western drivers behind these terrorist attacks. More of the same – bombings, racism, xenophobia, locking up people without evidence, closing the borders – will only strengthen support for ISIS.

Je suis Zaky Mallah anyone?

These are dangerous times. The Abbott government is strangling differences outside the narrow neoliberal mainstream. It is gathering extreme powers to itself under the lie of protecting Australia. It is othering significant sections of Australian society. It is trying to silence the Human Rights Commission and the ABC

The danger is real. That is why it is important to fight every attack of this rotten Liberal government. A good start will be the protests on 18 and 19 July across Australia against the Abbott endorsed (nudge nudge wink wink) Reclaim White Australia rallies.

Yarmouk: trapped between two counter-revolutions

Those Palestinians still in Yarmouk are trapped between two counter-revolutions, with the regime on one side and Isis on the other.

The rivalries that are tearing the Middle East apart

Eric Ruder in Socialist Worker US untangles the crisscrossing web of antagonisms in the Middle East and argues that ‘the latest military escalations by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia threaten to further destabilize a Middle East in which open hostilities and humanitarian disasters have multiplied, from Libya to Yemen, and Syria to Iraq .’

Not your average siege

Why was this siege any different to all the other sieges that happen? Why did this dominate the Australian media to the exclusion of almost everything else for 24 hours? Why? Because it fed our fears. Or perhaps because it fed what the media and ruling class hope are our fears. If Man Haron Monis had been a white Christian barricaded in his home holding his wife hostage, it would have rated at best a few minutes on local television, and no or little comment in our newspapers. Of course Man Haron Monis wasn’t a white Christian.

The Kurds of Kobanê : betrayal on all sides

The Kurds of Kobanê are the latest victims of a war that arose as a direct consequence of imperialism and oppression. Alan Maass and Tom Gagné explain the background in Socialist Worker US. They argue we must oppose every counterrevolutionary attempt to undermine either Kurdish self-determination or the Syrian uprising. One face of that counterrevolution is the reactionaries of ISIS, with their barbaric war on Kobanê. Another is the authoritarian and undemocratic regimes of the region–even when they oppose each other, as Erdogan’s Turkey and Assad’s Syria do. Last but not least is U.S. imperialism, which bears responsibility for the horrors unfolding in the Middle East today. Whether through direct intervention or support of reactionary forces, the U.S. is intent on maintaining its dominance in order to control the world’s most valuable resource: oil. As anti-imperialists in the U.S., we want to expose the hypocrisy and deceptions of the latest U.S. war drive–and build the forces demanding an end to its wars, so the masses of people in the Middle East can decide their collective future for themselves.

Abbott’s melancholy duty

Fellow Australians, it is my melancholy duty to inform you officially, that in consequence of the persistence by Islamic State in taking swathes of oil rich Iraq, the United States has declared a humanitarian mission against this cult of death and that, as a result, Australia is also at war. Tony ‘Menzies’ Abbott
