Je suis Zaky Mallah anyone?

These are dangerous times. The Abbott government is strangling differences outside the narrow neoliberal mainstream. It is gathering extreme powers to itself under the lie of protecting Australia. It is othering significant sections of Australian society. It is trying to silence the Human Rights Commission and the ABC

The danger is real. That is why it is important to fight every attack of this rotten Liberal government. A good start will be the protests on 18 and 19 July across Australia against the Abbott endorsed (nudge nudge wink wink) Reclaim White Australia rallies.

Je suis Hizb ut-Tahrir anyone?

Remember David Hicks, Mamdouh Habib and Muhamed Haneef. Remember David Eastman. Remember the tens of thousands of asylum seekers and their children we lock up for no crime. Remember all the Aborigines our rulers imprison and our police silence.

I have no truck with Hizb ut-Tahrir. However if we seriously believe in freedom of speech and association, and understand the sorry history in Australia and elsewhere of silencing people, including the left, then we have to defend the group against attempts to ban it. Je suis Hizb ut-Tahrir.

The Paris massacre and the West’s war mongering terrorist governments

NO ONE CAN have anything but the profoundest condemnation for the attacks on the Paris offices of the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo. [However] the latest attack will lead to a greater backlash and greater levels of Islamophobia. But it is not Muslims who are the problem but the foreign policies that have helped create terrorism. That is what needs to change.

Egypt: sometimes with the Islamists, never with the state

What do you do as a revolutionary socialist in the midst of this ongoing struggle in Egypt? One should not stop exposing the hypocrisy and the counterrevolutionary politics of the MB leadership. But we should not give up trying to attract the youth and those in the MB who are sincerely pro-revolution to the revolutionary camp and even winning them to socialist politics, something that I’m also increasingly witnessing.

The polarisation within the Islamist movement will only increase with every betrayal and compromise the Islamist leadership brokers with SCAF, with every confrontation with the state, with the growth of a revolutionary left that could provide an alternative for the disillusioned youth, and more importantly with the escalation of the strike wave.

But in all cases, we must be vigilant enough to remain organisationally independent, move under our own banners, with our own literature, and never compromise.

We should be sometimes with the Islamists, never with the state.
