Archive for 'Lenin'

Is it Lenin: Yes! Leninism: No?

At some point in the future we shall undoubtedly need centralised political organisation to focus all the different forms of struggle against the most concentrated form of capitalist power, the state. But it is hardly the problem at present. Our first task is much more basic, to rebuild the revolutionary left in a difficult period. So I shall end with a quote, not from Lenin, but from William Morris (who had a lot more in common with Lenin than admirers of his wallpaper might imagine): “We believe then, that it should be our special aim to make Socialists.”

Doubt all

We socialists are not and cannot be fundamentalists. We are scientific socialists and Marxism is the science of proletarian revolution, not the unthinking repetition of sacred texts.

What kind of party do we need?

Lenin concluded that you have to begin by grouping together militants and activists -because we’re not talking here about commentators and writers, but people who are involved in the actual struggle against capitalism – into a party that can lead politically other sections of the working-class movement through the ebbs and flow of the working-class struggle.

He used the term vanguard for this, to mean people who are in advance in consciousness – that is, who are enemies of capitalism, rather than half opposed and half accepting. This isn’t an insult – it’s the reality for most people, that they hate the system, but don’t know what else you can put in its place.

The point was how to put together a political organization that in reality represented the best fighters of the working-class movement.

The three sources of Marxism

Marxism is the legitimate successor to the best humanity produced in the nineteenth century, as represented by German philosophy, English political economy and French socialism. It is these three sources of Marxism, which are also its component parts that we shall outline in brief.

What is a vanguard party?

The critics of Leninism often characterize his conception of a revolutionary party as some sort of isolated sect. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Was the rise of Stalin inevitable?

The ultimate defeat of the Russian revolution has little to do with the Bolsheviks at all. Debate about this or that policy of Lenin or the Bolsheviks in the period following the revolution is really a bit of a sideshow to the much more significant fact that the Russian working-class was simply unable to hold onto power.

The lies about Lenin

Lenin dedicated his life to one thing and one thing only – the establishment of a society free from all forms of oppression. And to achieve this, he focused his attention on building an organization of revolutionaries – primarily of workers – capable of achieving that goal.

Need for party is not just historical

Lenin insisted that Marxists could not merely wait on events. Only a party that attempted to organise the most class conscious workers could be the instrument of revolution.

Engels on the withering away of the state

The state is not ‘abolished’. It withers away.

The rise of Stalin: What really happened in Russia?

“We have got the dictatorship of the proletariat! … I rub my hands and chuckle with glee. May the day soon come when the proletariat of Western Europe does the same.” Morgan Philips Price, a Manchester Guardian journalist stationed in Russia in 1917, wrote these words to his wife. He didn’t have to wait long. […]
