Martin Hirst on rejoining the Canberra Press Gallery

As Martin Hirst says, among other things, in his wonderful article on rejoining the Canberra Press Gallery:

‘If I’m going back to Canberra, back to the Press Gallery and back into that depressing pit of ego, subterfuge and sucking up that is our Federal Parliament, I’m doing it for only one reason: To expose what goes on behind the curtain; not to be complicit in ensuring only the approved messages and approved images get past the gate-keepers.

‘I’m doing it so that the cleaners and cooks from the ASU can have their stories told when they come to town to fight for wage justice. I’m doing it so that when the highly-paid corporate lobbyists try to sneak behind the curtain to grease the palms and seek the favours, they don’t get to do it in secret.’

We stand with Martin Hirst

This dark environment at Universities is the consequence of the ongoing and deepening commodification of higher education, a process both major parties have been deeply involved in. When your Grundnorm is profit, ideas which challenge that, however expressed, are a threat to the very essence of the machine that is now the University sector. That machine is destroying the University as the seeming bastion of difference and the dissemination of often currently unconventional and unpopular ideas. To defend academic freedom we must defend Martin Hirst.

The revolution will not be twitter-ized

Martin Hirst at Ethical Martini  makes the obvious comment that revolutions are made by people in their workplaces and on the streets, not on twitter.  Have a read of The revolution will not be twitter-ized and listen to Martin’s interview.  Martin is a professor of journalism at AUT.
