Press Release: Protest at Parliament House – Bring the refugees here

John Passant, well known Canberra based socialist and prospective ACT Senate candidate in 2019, welcomed the refugee protest at Parliament House. ‘It was a great display of democracy,’ Mr Passant said, ‘bringing the voice of voiceless refugees to the attention of the wider public.’ ‘It interrupted for a few minutes the daily posturing of the wafflers and trough sniffers in Parliament and highlighted the lives permanently interrupted on Manus and Nauru,’ he said.

Shock A.C.T. Senate polling results

New polling shows that the threat to the Liberals in the Senate in the A.C.T., and indeed to the Greens and Labor, comes from well known Canberra socialist John Passant.

If only we could elect better politicians eh?

Bob Douglas (Canberra Times Letters 19 August) has given eloquent voice to the despair many many Australians feel about their elected ‘representatives’. However I don’t think, as Bob seems to, the answer lies just in searching for better candidates. The problem is systemic. By all means consider forming new electoral alliances to fight for better representatives. But understand that the forces at play are much deeper and more entrenched than can be solved by having that nice Mr Turnbull or likable Mr Albanese (or variations on that theme) in the Lodge rather than the two pathetic alternatives offered up to us at the moment.

Should we campaign to put a socialist in the Senate?

The question is how to break out of the hamster wheel of Liberal and Labor conservatism. Is putting a socialist in the Senate viable? Do you support it?

Put a socialist in the Senate

Independent socialist and prospective Senate candidate in the ACT, John Passant, today welcomed the selection of former Chief Minister Katy Gallagher as the Labor Party’s replacement for retiring Senator Kate Lundy.
Mr Passant said that he looked forward to debating the neoliberal and pro-austerity Ms Gallagher on the big economic and social issues of the day. Let’s shake up politics in Australia, he said. Put a Socialist in the Senate.
