When will the left hear the cries from Aleppo?

In a response to articles by journalist Max Blumenthal, Ashley Smith in Socialist Worker US challenges the view that the Syrian Revolution has been manipulated by the U.S. from the beginning. We must stand in solidarity with genuine liberation struggles from below, regardless of which imperial camp they are challenging. Our slogan is neither Washington, nor Moscow, nor Beijing, nor Damascus, nor Tehran, nor Riyadh, but self-determination for oppressed nations and international socialism.

The revolutions that ended World War I

Thank Russian and German workers for their revolutions that ended the war to end all wars. The fact that imperialist and other wars continue today shows that our task as socialists remains – to fight for socialism to end war. Only democratic socialist revolutions by the mass of workers can end war.

Syria, Iraq and the movement of refugees: International Socialist Tendency

This is a research paper by Christine Buchholz (Die Linke member of parliament) and Frank Renken, translated by Ben Windsor and published on 21 September.

They say in part:

‘Nonetheless, it is the forces at the bottom of society, and not the top, that a left-wing politics must orientate on.

‘Ultimately it is only a revival of the democratic mass movements in the region that can offer a way towards peace and social justice.’

Russia, the West and Assad

In the October edition of socialist magazine Solidarity, James Supple writes about the situation in Syria. He says in part:

‘We should oppose Russian, US and Australian bombing as well as all forms of foreign imperialist intervention.’

Later on he argues:

‘Assad is no lesser evil to Islamic State and similar rebel groups like the Al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al Nusra. Like IS, the Assad regime also ruthlessly represses any political dissent, has targeted ethnic minorities and is waging sectarian war.

‘The solution to the nightmare in Syria can only come through a revival of the democratic movement that erupted in 2011.’

Why is Russia bombing in Syria?

With Vladimir Putin’s Russia carrying out air strikes in Syria, Eric Ruder in Socialist Worker US explains the backdrop to the conflict and the consequences of this new stage in the violence.   RUSSIA’S INTERVENTION in the civil war in Syria marks the beginning of an ominous new chapter in a conflict that has already […]

War in the Ukraine?

Alan Maass and Lee Sustar writing in Socialist Worker US provide the background for understanding Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine – and inter-imperialist rivalries that are coming to a head.

A tale of two walls

The fall of the Stalinist states across Eastern Europe was a magnificent victory for the people of the region and a step forward for humanity. Time and again the working class challenged the right of the privileged few in Russia and its vassal states to rule over them politically and  economically. The barbaric states that paraded […]

How Afghanistan became the graveyard of the Russian empire

When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 they thought they were in for an easy victory. But they underestimated the power of the resistance, writes Dave Crouch in this week’s British magazine Socialist Worker. In the early 1990s a common sight in the Moscow metro was young men in military uniform begging for money. […]

How the US created Osama bin Laden

The “terrorists” of today like Osama bin Laden were trained, funded and backed by US imperialism yesterday.

The moon landing: the Vietnam of space

While the achievement of walking on the moon shows the great capacity and potential of humanity, its driving force – imperialist competition – shows we have far to go before we are all astronauts of our own earth.
