Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Death to the Death Penalty

The execution of the Bali bombers will be a crime against humanity.

It reduces all of us to the level of the bombers, where life is cheapened in the name of ideology.

The taking of human life is an abomination and those who rejoice at the death of the three have joined them in dehumanisation and barbarity.

While alienation might explain why some will feel joy at the death of others, it will not overcome it. Alienation is at the heart of capitalism Рthe theft of the value workers create, the fact relationships between humans  are seen as relationships between things Рwill continue until we abolish the social structures that produce such alienation.

The rush that the execution produces among some will not last long, and they will continue to search for other rushes to address alienation – reaching perhaps for the needle of anti-Muslim and other racism.

This execution will be a cocktail of reaction; a mixture of racism (they are “only” Indonesians after all,) anti-Islamic feeling, (they are “only” Muslims after all, and fundamentalists at that), retribution and perhaps some freudenschade.

Kevin Rudd’s acceptance of this terrible act is a disgrace to all Australians and indeed seems to contradict his supposed Christian beliefs, beliefs I suspect are more for public consumption than for private truth.

I stand firmly against this state barbarism and the support it will receive from some sections of Australian society.
