Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Marxism 2009: Middle East speakers, and John Pilger

Every year, Socialist Alternative hosts its Marxism Conference over Easter at Melbourne University.

This year Marxism 2009 promises to be a blockbuster of debate, discussion and elucidation.

Israel’s current bombardment of Palestine has put the world spotlight back on events in the Middle East. With over 800, 900, 1000, 1300 Palestinians killed and thousands more injured, the brutality of Israel and the US in establishing their world hegemony is clear. But the recent history of the Middle East is one of resistance, both to imperialism and to attacks on the living standards of workers and the poor.

Marxism 2009 will feature a number of sessions on Middle Eastern politics and struggle. 2 speakers from the region will be there.

Egyptian activist Mamdouh Habashi

Mamdouh Habashi is a long term Egyptian left wing activist and theorist. He has been involved in the Cairo Conferences against the wars in Iraq and Palestine and also participated in the 2008 strikes of the Egyptian textile workers.

Lebanese socialist Bassem Chit

Bassem Chit is a socialist from Lebanon. He writes widely on Lebanese politics and imperialism in the Middle East. He was involved in the left’s resistance to the Israeli war on Lebanon in 2006.

World renowned investigative journalist John Pilger

John Pilger is a renowned investigative reporter and documentary film maker who was called “the most outstanding journalist in the world today” by the Guardian newspaper. He is the author of numerous articles on the war on Iraq and Afghanistan. He also made the 2002 film ‘Palestine is still the issue’.

Other sessions

Class and Sect in the Middle East: Sunday 12th April 2pm
