Geoscience Australia loses its way

150 jobs – that’s how many contractors this financial year won’t have their contracts renewed at Geoscience Australia.

It means 20 percent of the workforce won’t be there after 30 June.

The agency has also frozen recruitment and new equipment purchases.

Why?  Declining budgets now and into the future.

In other words the Rudd Labor Government has starved Geoscience Australia of funds and will impose even tighter restrictions in years to come.

Geoscience Australia supplies data to the mining industry, data which enables efficient exploration.

The leadership of the Community and Public Service Union is upset.  But not too upset to do anything to save the jobs.

No doubt the union’s advertisement campaign and affiliation to the ALP will continue apace and not save one member’s job.

If the Government can get away with this, they’ll destroy jobs across the Public Service in the May Budget, probably through continuing the ‘efficiency’ dividend at 3.25 percent if not more.

The ATO for example is looking to abolish 3000 jobs in one area alone.

The union estimates that last year the ‘efficiency’ dividend ‘saved’ around $600 m and cost 3000 jobs.  This year the jobs figure will be much higher as the ‘savings’ from capital expenditure, travel, accommodation and the like dry up.

It’s time to take a stand for jobs, CPSU leadership.  Not ads, not ALP affiliation, but action to defend jobs.  Now.
