Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Young workers, students and socialism: a voice for the voiceless

Young workers and students (both at University and High School) are often voiceless.

One moment at Socialist Alternative’s Marxism 2009 made a deep impression on me and reinforces the point that there is much students and young workers have to offer older currents of the revolutionary movement.

Aboriginal activist Barbara Shaw had just spoken at the wrap up and hundreds of young people spontaneously began chanting “Always was, always will be, aboriginal land.”

It was uplifting, and gave a sense of the commitment to human liberation that our young members have.  Need I add, unlike the Young Liberals or Young Labor?

I have been thinking about how we could give a voice to the voiceless among young workers and students.

I have published a few pieces from ANU students on this site already but want a wider group to submit their views for debate and discussion.

Many good left wing student essays are lost to history, or the Faculty’s archives.

Many young workers don’t bother expressing their ideas orally or in writing for fear of being ridiculed.

So I’ve decided to set up a spot on this site where we will publish good left wing essays from students and young workers.

It won’t be refereed but at least it will give some students and young workers confidence to continue left wing writing, research and activity as well as giving them an outlet for their views and analysis and the personal satisfaction that goes with publication.

I also see it as bringing a range of ideas into the open for debate among a wider audience and helping to clarify the ideas we have.

Send me a copy of the piece and a short paragraph about yourself plus contact details if I need to ring you about it. (Let me stress the contact details are not for publication).

Not all submissions will necessarily be published but my aim is to be inclusive, not exclusive.

Send the details to me at
