CSIRO BOMs climate change deniers

Every so often a document comes our way which lights up the sky with its clarity.

Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and the Bureau of Meteorology have done just that in their State of the Climate report.

Using data collected over the last sixty to one hundred years in Australia the report concludes unequivocally that climate change is real.

Further it says that ‘there is greater than 90% certainty that increases in greenhouse gas emissions have caused most of the global warming since the mid-20th century.’  Those increases are human induced.

The evidence is overwhelming.

The report says that since 1960 the mean temperature in Australia has increased by about 0.7 °C. It goes on to show that:

  • the number of days with record hot temperatures has increased each decade over the past 50 years,
  • there have been fewer record cold days each decade, and
  • 2000 to 2009 was Australia’s warmest decade on record

While rainfall overall remained much the same, its geographic distribution changed, with more rain in northern and central Australian and less rain in southern and eastern regions (where the major cities are).

The report documents that global sea levels are rising and that between 1993 and 2006 the sea level rise has been 1.5 to 3mm per year in the south and east of Australia and 7 to 10mm per year in the north and west.

On CO2 and methane emissions the Report says:

CO2 concentrations have risen rapidly over the last century. Methane, which is another greenhouse gas, has shown similar increases.

The carbon dioxide concentration in 2009 of 386 parts per million (ppm) is much higher than the natural range of 170 to 300 ppm that has existed in the atmosphere for at least the past 800,000 years and possibly the past 20 million years.

That CO2 concentration is growing each year.

Doing nothing is not a rational choice, but in a society where profit comes before all else, the fact that addressing climate change will impinge on the profit making process means that doing nothing is the real choice of the bosses and their politicians (even if it is dressed up in rhetoric about a carbon pollution reduction scheme or a direction action agenda.)

As Bob Dylan put it, let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late. Unfortunately lies are the stock in trade of our bourgeoisie and their paid parrots.

It is not enough to have the facts at our disposal. The mass inertia of their system will only be moved if we, the people, take direct action to force change on the conservatives and ultimately challenge the primacy of profit.

Are we up to the task?

I fear we’re not.

This is evidence of human-induced warming, at least in Australia. Is it evidence of imminent catastrophe?

You have to remember that scientists have a self interest in keeping the fear going and exaggerating the dangers. If they are wrong then they can justify it that it was better to be over cautious.

What would you do if your funding depended upon maintaining the present status quo? What would you do if you had been ignored for decades with poor funding and felt ignored or used.

They probably have a lot more integrity than the vultures in Wall St but people are swayed by he urge to survive particularily if they can point to the noble cause of saving the planet.
