CPSU supports Equal Love Campaign

The Community and Public Sector Union National Executive has passed the following motion (moved by National Secretary Nadine Flood) to support the Equal Love campaign and in particular the demonstrations around Australia on 15 May.

CPSU Executive Committee notes concerns expressed by members and delegates at discrimination against homosexual, bisexual and transgender people in the workplace, under legislation and in the community, including under marriage legislation.

CPSU has a long and proud history of supporting workers seeking equal rights in all areas of life. Executive Committee resolves to join other unions, peak union bodies and community organisations in supporting marriage equality and specifically the Equal Love campaign to support same sex marriage as a civil right, noting that;

  • Same sex civil union partners have less recognition by employers, under legislation and by institutions in many areas of life;
  • CPSU members report discrimination on the basis of sexual preference in the workplace and in recognition of industrial rights on an equal basis;
  • Different requirements to prove same sex relationships to government, employers and institutions such as superannuation and insurance companies are often intrusive and discriminatory;
  • Research shows a majority of Australians support same sex marriage; and
  • An increasing number of countries now recognise same sex marriage.

Executive Committee resolves to commit and support the Equal Love campaign by;

  • CPSU (PSU group) being listed as a supporter of the equal marriage campaign and listing its support on our website
  • promoting the campaign and upcoming events via website, e-news and other means
  • providing a speaker and organising CPSU contingents where possible to May 15 events
  • approaching CPSU-SPSF Branches and seeking their support for the campaign
  • making a monetary donation of $500 to Equal Love nationally and $500 to Equal Love ACT.

Executive Committee nominates Deputy National President Lisa Newman with responsibility for implementing this resolution.

Already the ACT Branch of the CPSU has organised the printing of 1000 posters and staffed a happy hour at AUSAID with some of those posters prominent and raised $200 there for the campaign.

To all union activists this is good motion. Push for something similar in your union (at local, state and national levels) too. This motion flowed from the initiative of one Socialist Alternative member in Canberra. in his local workplace. You can do it too.

The fight against discrimination is a union fight.
