What is happening at the Financial Review?

I have written before of the fact I like reading the bosses’ newspaper, the Australian Financial Review.¬† But under new editor Michael Stutchbury it has lurched to the right.

I wrote this letter to them a few days ago (unpublished so far) about the expos√© of the Murdoch’s press’s spy unit.

I guess, Michael Stutchbury, with the Murdochisation of the Australian Financial Review in full swing in an attempt to appeal to the fruitcake faction of capital, spin has to replace quality as a way of differentiating the soon to be identical brands. (‘No agenda but the news’ AFR Monday 2 April page 54).

Now with news that the Fin has sacked Keynesian John Quiggin (whose columns I enjoy very much for their insights and illuminating facts), it seems clear the trickle to the right is in danger of becoming a flood.

It is a pity my union, the MEAA, is not strong enough to defend John specifically and more generally to stop the tsunami of Murdochisation now happening at the Financial Review.
