Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Opening night Marxism 2013

It was, I imagined, like the early days of social democratic parties when they were proudly socialist and proudly workers’ parties. Lots of workers and lots of discussion about how to beat the bosses, and ultimately to win the battle for socialism. The way forward both politically and organisationally (recognising that the distinction is artificial) would have been, and remains, an important part of that discussion.

Gerry Rivera inspired the full house with his talk about the 18 month and still ongoing Philippine Airlines’ workers strike against outsourcing. Bob Carnegie spoke about his important role in the Queensland Children’s’ Hospital 9 week strike. For his community help role in the strike, a strike which the workers ran, Bob is now facing 18 charges including contempt of court.

He mentioend too his journey from Stalinism to Trotsky as part of understanding the real nature of workers’ self-emancipation.

At Bob’s suggestion we passed the hat around and raised $1000 for the Philippine Airline workers.

Then there was Brian Jones, an inspiring socialist from the US who won the crowd with his wit, charm and commitment to working class struggle. His broad brush of US politics painted a picture of subterranean anger looking for an outlet. He said that people no longer ask why change the system; they ask how.

Peter Boyle for Socialist Alliance spoke about the need for political will for left unity and the matters that unite us. He also talked about the comradely tone and openness in the discussions and the need to go deeper into what the differences are about.

Kim Bullimore from the Revolutionary Socialist Party talked passionately about the merger of the RSP with Socialist Alternative, a merger that is as of this Conference complete. Kim is now a proud member of Socialist Alternative, along with many other members of the RSP.

It shows the changes over the last year that both Kim and Peter before her mentioned how a year ago they could not have imagined standing on the openning night platform of Socialist Alternative.

Vashti Kenway from Socialist Alternative finished the conference telling us about the inequalities of capitalism and the need for a fighting revolutionary left.

And that was just the first 2 hours! With speakers like John Pilger, Billy X Jennings from the Black Panther Party, Gary Foley, Gerry Rivera, Brian Jones and a range of other international and local speakers the next 3 days of Marxism promises to be very exciting. If you are on the left, if you are a socialist, then, if you can, come to Marxism 2013. The next 3 days promise to be informative and inspiring. If you want to fight back against capitalism and all its ills, consider joining Socialist Alternative.

Yes Sara. It was a great first night. The second day has been just as interesting. According to the organisers we have sold more than 1000 tickets. The Pilger session – on now – has been moved to a bigger hall and is sold out.
