Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

The Panopticon of Barack Milhous Obama

Barack Obama’s PRISM is a giant spying program. The interlocking system of government and net and other information companies accesses, analyses and stores all our information.

This massive spying program, redolent of 1984, highlights one of the realities of capitalism. Our rulers don’t trust us. They suspect us; they think we could be organising against them.

Obama is not alone. The Australian Federal Police have in the last year made tens of thousands of metadata requests from the likes of Facebook. They have also sought PRISM information.

The response of the ruling class to its suspicions is twofold. First Obama has expanded the George W Bush drone program, killing many innocent people in faraway lands. Like Basics Card in Australia the first target was dark skinned people in distant places. But having successfully tested the program on them it can them be expanded to other suspect communities closer to the centres of power.

Second, as Edward Snowden has made clear, the Administration is spying on us all. It is the watchman of the Panopticon, the model prison to control and discipline us. We are all guilty – worthy prisoners in Obama’s societal jail.

Can we escape their jailhouse? A good first start is to Winston Smith our ideas. A second would be to read, to read Red Flag for example, the new paper of Socialist Alternative. But to beat the Panopticon, we need to tear it down. There is one group with the strength to do this. We who build and rebuild every day the prison that is capitalism can not only tear it down. We can build a new world where there are no physical or mental prisons, no spies and no mass surveillance. We workers have that power.

In 1984 Winston Smith wrote ‘If there is hope, it lies in the proles.’ It was true in 1948; it is true now.
