Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Senseless killings

The gunning down of Chris Lane has got me thinking about senseless killings.

The one million dead in Iraq comes to mind.  The thousands of dead women and children of Afghanistan come into my view.

Obama’s drone bombs have killed thousands of innocent people.

But these aren’t senseless killings. For the US ruling elite, murdering millions makes perfect sense.

The reasons will differ slightly but they boil down to defending and extending US imperialism and the control it has to impose on the world for its companies to make profits and to ensure the supply of oil.

Bradley Manning is now in jail for 35 years for releasing a video of US war criminals killing innocent people. The mass murderers are not in prison. Again, this makes perfect sense. Those who kill in the name of freedom and justice are immune from prosecution.

Spot the war criminals

The terrorist in chief in Washington wields so much power he is untouchable. By any objective analysis of the criteria, every US President since the the second world war is a war criminal. The power of US imperialism protects them.

Australians and Americans are rightly mourning Chris Lane’s murder. However a nation built on brutalising the world is itself brutalised; the sickness it spreads overseas can’t be quarantined at home.

The media in Australia have reported extensively on Chris Lane’s murder. They do not show, let alone remark upon, the numerous Chrises in Afghanistan or Pakistan that US drones and the Occupation forces have murdered.  It serves the interests of the ruling elite in Australia and the US to ignore the reality of the death they unleash around the globe.

You do your credibility no good by constantly ignoring the other source of senseless killings – and that is the sectarian war currently under way in most, if not all, Middles Eastern countries! It makes you realise that, for all the barbaric atrocities committed by past ‘strong men’ like Saddam Hussein and Hosni Mubarak, removing them has just unleashed another round of barbaric atrocities.
