Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Saturday’s socialist speak out

After only 8 weeks in power the Abbott government’s anti-refugee policies are in tatters, destroyed by Indonesia’s refusal to take back asylum seekers rescued by Australia in Indonesia’s rescue zone. The Indonesians are doing a Tampa to the Tampaistas in the government because the Australian Embassy in Jakarta is a den of spies. And because the arrogant white boys and woman in the Abbott government need reminding that the white man’s burden doesn’t mean you can push the Indonesians around.

There may be some temporary resolution but the utter lie that was the Liberals’ slogan ‘Turn back the boats’ or on other days ‘Tow back the boats’ is exposed. They’ll be forced to sprout now how the boats have stopped over the last few weeks. But Indonesia’s rejection of Australia’s position means, if they can’t stitch up a deal, that the Abbott government will be forced to take these refugees. This will be a humiliating defeat for the anti-refugee racists.

Of course, if Indonesia does stop the boats and forces Abbott’s Australia to take these refugees, they will be sent to concentration camps on Nauru or Manus Island.

Update: ABC News is reporting that the Australian government will take the refugees to Christmas Island where they will be transferred to Manus Island or Nauru. This is a massive and humiliating defeat for the Abbott government.

A Rohingya woman, bought from Nauru to Brisbane to give birth, will be sent back to her other children and husband on Nauru when she and her baby can be. Nauru is a malaria centre and young children cannot be given anti-malarial tablets. The food, according to the Rohingya woman, is sub-standard. She and her family are being put deliberately in danger by good Christian, Immigration Minister Scott Morrison and good Catholic Tony Abbott.

We do not know the Rohingya woman’s name. This is part of a government strategy to dehumanise refugees. That is why we don’t find out anything from the government with its cone of silence on refugees. ‘For operational reasons’ looks like it is cover for – ‘our policy is a complete failure so we don’t want you to know what is happening. ‘

Treasurer Joe Hockey released some guidance as to how the Coalition government would deal with a backlog of tax matters. In essence if you are rich or a multinational then changes that would have taxed you more won’t go ahead. If you are poor or a worker they will. He ahs also warned that living standards could drop if productivity doesn’t reach record elvels. What he doesn’t mention is that labour productivity has been increasing well over the last decade. It is capital that isn’t pulling its weight.

Last week I wrote that ‘if I were the ALP I’d be talking a complete revamp of parliamentary expenses and calling for a judicial enquiry into their abuse, with chief rorter Tony Abbott clearly in their sights.’ It seems the Abbott government are going to reform the corrupt parliamentary expenses system. They announced today they would fine parliamentarians who overclaim. Why aren’t theyjailed for fraud?

The expenses rort, with Barnaby Joyce again in on it, this time enjoying some big rugby league games last year at our expense, is but one of a number of corruption scandals. Eddie Obeid in NSW is showing the apprentices how the master did it. The quagmire is drawing in more and more NSW Labor Party people.

Overseas bribery – often called facilitation payments – by Australian companies is a crime. In the last 13 years one prosecution has been launched. One. Evidently these are sophisticated people with lots of money.

Well, yes , the Reserve Bank and Leightons are that. So why don’t the Australian Federal Police and Australian Securities and Investment Commission raid their offices, like Queensland police have been raiding bikie clubs under the Unlawful Associations Laws?

Surely they already have enough powers. If not, why not give them more power and money to crack down on these illegal companies bribing their way to profit overseas?

Labor Party heavies have also been fidlling union tills.Former ALP national president Michael Williamson, the Health Services Union head honcho, stole $1 million from members.

By the way, estimates are that bikie gangs contribute about 0.6% to overall crime. So while the repressive State concentrates on that 0.6%, the rest can grow and expand. Some of these real criminal associations will have close links to ‘legitimate’ big businesses or indeed be legitimate big businesses.

The controversy surrounding corruption is not about rotten apples. Capitalism is corrupt. It exists by exploiting workers and extracting the surplus value – profits, interest, rent – from them by not paying them for the full value of what they produce. Individuals in the system fight each other for a share of that surplus and will cheat if needed to get more for their company or themselves.

Unemployment remained steady at 5.7%. This was because people gave up looking for work and because although full time jobs fell, part time ones increased. The Roy Morgan unemployment and underemployment figures give a more realistic assessment of what is happening on the ground with unemployment at 10.4% and underemployment at 7.9% for September 2013.

What is missing from the job cutting onslaught the government and its mates are launching is any union or working class fightback.

It will only get worse. The age of sackings has begun. QANTAS has decided to close down its heavy maintenance facility at Avalon, near Geelong.

Our Prime Minister expressed sympathy and said ‘In the end these are decisions that businesses do have to make from time to time’. Shit happens eh Tony and sacking workers is just part of being ‘Open for business’? You really don’t give a toss for workers and your election is the signal that on jobs it is open slather for business.

CSIRO is getting rid of 600 of its staff, about 25% of its employees. These are people on contract, and they include scientists and other researchers. Other public service agencies will follow suit. This will both increase workloads for those who remain and in the case of specialists being given the arse, the abandonment of that work.

Who needs scientific research anyway when you have former PM John Howard relying on his ‘instinct’ and labelling the vast majority of climate change scientists as warmists. Having abolished the Climate Commission and now gutted the CSIRO, and keeping climate change in the Department of the Industry, the Abbott government, Howard’s spawn, won’t have to worry too much about independent advice that will challenge the rule of their rich mates and the right to make a profit unhindered by considerations like the impact of their actions on the Earth on which we live.

We have entered the age of rational irrationality. Eat, drink and make profit for tomorrow we die.

According to this article in the SMH, ALP and union bigwig Williamson has admitted stealing 5 million dollars from the Health Services Union, not the 1 million quoted above.

He pleaded guilty to stealing one million. That is the figure most Australian media use. But I guess you being in the UK wouldn’t be across this.
