Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Doubt all

These are the last few paragraphs of something I wrote in 2012 called From the Bible to Marx and beyond.

One of the hallmarks of the serious left is uncertainty, enquiry and analysis informing action, captured by Rosa Luxemburg’s famous dictum – Doubt all.

Some on the Left may have a tendency to visit the sacred texts of Marx, Engels, Lenin or Trotsky and proclaim the way forward based on their words without the interposition of critical thought.

Repetition is not recognition. We must ask why did our comrades write these words? What was the context? What method – the dialectical method – are they using? How can I too think dialectically?

At times I have been guilty of Marx mongering, of Engels elucidation, of Lenin lectures and Trotsky tutorials. It is a handy way to avoid the scientific process, to avoid critical thought, to avoid that inconvenient debate with comrades. Or to shit stir.

Of course, when we do begin by doubting, we do so to analyse and understand the subject and having forged our truth in the flames of critical dialectical thought, to take actions based on that analysis that take the prospect of working class revolution forward (even if it is only a tiny step and a long long way removed from that ultimate goal.)

We socialists are not and cannot be fundamentalists. We are scientific socialists and Marxism is the science of proletarian revolution, not the unthinking repetition of sacred texts.

I think one major step that could be taken in a working class revolution would be to insist on a measured u-turn and wind back to a government run pension system.
