Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Stalinist tyrannies ruling in the name of socialism

I posted this article a month ago.

Paul D’Amato explains why those countries that call themselves socialist are nothing of the sort, as part of his series on the ISO’s “Where We Stand” statement in Socialist Worker US.

I wonder if those few of us in Australia who still believe that the emancipation of the working class is the act of the working class and hence the Stalinist regimes are or were not socialist, but state capitalist, could set up an Australian branch of the US International Socialist Organisation? Maybe we could call it the emancipation of labour group.

Paul D’Amato’s piece is an example of appropriate referencing of Stalin.

Cory’s little effort was blighted by:

“the cancer of Stalinism has not yet been exorcised”

“There are only a few groups on the left today willing to openly argue that the model for socialism is authoritarian dictatorship”

Who? Where? Somewhere overseas?

What’s the point but to smear modern day socialist activists.

Who is this referring to:

“Stalinism infected almost every aspect of left wing politics.”

Why imply that Chavez is a Stalinist? If not why rant on about Gaddafi in an article headed:

“Confronting the Stalinist legacy”

Why jumble up with Scargill, Jean McLean and Irina Dunn?????

What a mess.

Was this a Freudian slip – “Thankfully this group is today an irrelevant, withering sect.”

That bell tolls for Corey Oakley.

Only some splintered elements hold that:

“From the late 1920s until the fall of the Berlin Wall and collapse of the USSR in 1989-91, the “Russian question”, in various forms, was the key issue facing the revolutionary left internationally.”

Better elements would focus on international political economy, the impact of Cold War, and building international class consciousness and solidarity, and their own platform for tackling their own bourgeoise.

How can you say:

“According to Clarke, revolution was not only unnecessary in the USSR, it was highly unlikely, given the esteem with which Soviet citizens regarded their government:”

When the evidence cited says:

“The great majority of Soviet citizens are firm supporters of socialism and of the party. The advantages of socialism are regarded as having been proven in practice, and the party as having earned the right to continue to lead the people forward…”

This tends to support, contrary to Oakley, Renfrey Clarkes view that:

“The Soviet workers and peasants have already made their revolution.”

However, in the 1980’s, under Gorbachev, they were looking for ways to restructure their socialism.

And Socialist Alliance people have every right to be outraged at juvenille labelling as ‘Stalinist”. Everyone on the Left should be outraged as well.

On and on went the Corey, Stalin this, Stalinist that, Stalinism here, Stalinism there, Stalinism everywhere …. 85 times.

Oakley is launching a private show-trial.

What next?
