Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

It’s the St Louis all over again

In 1939 the US turned back the boat the St Louis with 939 Jews on board. It went back to Europe. Estimates are that at least 250 of those Jews died in the Holocaust. (You can read more about that incident in a previous post of mine called Turning back the bigots. )

It is the same logic that sees Australian ‘Border Protection’ Minister Scott Morrison return asylum seekers to the war criminals and human rights abusers in charge of Sri Lanka.

BBC File photo (March 2013) of Tamil asylum seekers in Indonesia

The 41 Sri Lankans hijacked on the open seas – kidnapped in other words – and returned by the Abbott Government to the Sri Lanka regime were taken to the ‘feared Criminal Investigation Office’ (The Australian’s words, not mine).

They now face charges related to ‘illegally fleeing’ Sri Lanka and face jail of up to 3 months or five years for organisers.

These aren’t the fabled and mythical ‘economic refugees’ of the reactionaries’ ‘mind’, they are people fleeing a violent human rights abusing regime.

And frankly I don’t care if they are fleeing for economic reasons. Capital is free to flow more or less unhindered around the world. Labour should be free to do so too.
