I am not surprised
I think we are being unfair to this Abbott ‘no surprises’ Government. I am not surprised. (0)

Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

The Abbott government’s message to we mere plebs: it’s time to elect a new people

Tony Abbott’s revitalising the government speech on Monday and his ministers blaming us for not understanding them (In between professing undying love for Abbott) reminded me of a Bertolt Brecht poem, a theme that David Pope also captured in his cartoon in the Canberra Times on Wednesday.

Before I share them I thought I’d show some pictures from the Abbott speech with the Abbottmeister wowing his captive audience. Here are his wife and the Deputy Prime Minister unable to contain their joy.

Not to worry. Some of his other Ministers were equally overjoyed.  Smirk, lurk and perk show their unbridled enthusiasm.

Three senior Abbott Government ministers watching his speech today.

Socialist Alternative has reworked the speech to reveal what Abbott really meant, all in 40 seconds. Business elected us to make your difficulties worse. Click here. The HONEST version of Tony Abbott’s Press Club speech.

Apparently we absentminded voters are to blame for not understanding what good things this government is doing.  That arrogant Abbott comment, and the parroting by his ministers that they just need to sell the shit sandwich better is the height of being out of touch and divorced from ordinary people and their concerns. This lack of confidence in we the people reminded me of something Bertolt Brecht wrote in 1953 after the uprising in East Germany against the Stalinist dictatorship.

The Solution

After the uprising of the 17th of June
The Secretary of the Writers’ Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

David Pope echoes this theme in the Canberra Times on Wednesday 4 February.

It is time for our unions to mobilise against Abbott and turf this rotten government out.
