The theft at the heart of growing inequality

Danny Katch writes in Socialist Worker US about the increasing gap between the rich and the rest of us. He says in part:

The fact of the matter is this: The rising gap between the rich and the rest of us isn’t being caused by mysterious new forces, but by a very old-fashioned one: theft.

THE BIGGEST heist in history, committed by the ruling class, has three distinct parts, each employing its own criminal technique. There’s the in-your-face mugging–forcing workers’ wages down in order increase profits. There’s bribery–showering Congress with cash in return for tax cuts for the super-rich. And there’s the long con–complicated financial schemes hatched by Wall Street to suck money away from ordinary people’s savings.

The most significant of these crimes is the attack on wages.

Yes…all true. It’s now official, one percent of the planet’s humans control ninety-nine percent of the assets and wealth…and much good it is doing them. They have discovered it hasn’t brought happiness or respect or anything valuable, so they’re spitting the dummy and refusing to do anything to stop the climate changing drastically. If they can’t enjoy this planet then no one is going to. They’ll smash the toy.
