Slaughter in Yarmouk as the West watches

Written over a week ago but still relevant.

Since the beginning of April, the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Syria has been witnessing continuous violent terrorist attacks led by the Islamic State (ISIS), supported by  al-Nusra Front fighters, and under the watchful eye of Assad’s forces, which have imposed a blockade on the camp and its residents for nearly two years now.

The cities south of Damascus are intertwined in a way that it is difficult to discern where each one begins and where each one ends. Yarmouk camp – one of the most densely populated areas south of the capital – is at the center of the southern region of Damascus, adjacent to al-Tadamon neighborhood.

At the time of writing, ISIS forces had been advancing to the neighborhoods and streets of the Yarmouk refugee camp, amid fierce resistance by Palestinian fighters remaining in the camp and by scores of young men and women who are rushing to defend their camp. The delay in responsiveness by the Syrian opposition – represented by Jaysh al-Islam, Ahrar al-Sham, Houran Brigade, and Sham al-Rassoul – and its failure to conduct a swift counter attack has cornered the popular resistance, with the Assad regime at their back and ISIS fighters advancing towards the camp, as the world stands watching Yarmouk camp being slaughtered.

Albeit late, Syrian opposition formations have started to intervene to stop the expansion of the fascist ISIS factions, which was about to take them one by one if the military response had been delayed further. A victory for ISIS would have meant a defeat for the revolution and the continuation of the Assad’s control.

Meanwhile, the PLO considered the situation in the Yarmouk refugee camp to be an “internal Syrian affair”. However, the PLO needs to take a clear position regarding the slaughter of Palestinians in Yarmouk, as it is both a Palestinian and humanitarian cause.

We also remind international organizations of the need to fulfill their simplest duties and avert a potential massacre committed by ISIS fighters, who have already kidnapped more than 75 civilians from the camp and executed three. Assad’s forces should also be pressured to allow the transportation of all the wounded to nearby health facilities and hospitals in the capital, regardless of affiliation, and especially, but not limited to, civilians.
