Labor tries to out-Abbott Turnbull on border ‘protection’

On ABC AM on Tuesday morning, Richard Marles, Labor’s Shadow Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, attacks the  Turnbull government from the right over border ‘protection’ (aka the militarisation of the treatment of asylum seekers.)

By the way Marles didn’t say it was an outstanding development. He said it was an astounding development. Here is part of the report:

The Immigration Minister Peter Dutton is no longer part of the National Security Committee of Cabinet. That’s a big shift from when Operation Sovereign Borders was in full swing.

Labor’s spokesman Richard Marles questions it.

RICHARD MARLES: The idea that border protection is not seen as a matter of our nation’s security is frankly ridiculous.

I think this is an outstanding [JP: astounding] development.

Labor needs to consider the tide of public opinion regarding overseas detention of refugees. Temporary visas for those currently in custody makes more sense then spending millions attempting to resettle them in Cambodia. Up the intake of refugees to a more reasonable level.
