Reflections on a flickering candle

You know, I have been thinking about chucking it all in – my PhD, my tax writing – and having a break from politics and maybe my blog too. Hiding away somewhere on the coast to write poetry appeals more and more, especially now that Ginninderra Press has agreed to publish a collection of my poems, mid next year.

However, I do want to keep disturbing the war, as Zinn puts it, but the conservatism of the tax academy is getting me down, and down, and down, big time. Why bash my head against a brick wall, tilt at windmills etc etc?  After 33 tax academic job applications in the last 4 years and only one interview, it seems pretty clear to me that a 61 year old socialist is never going to re-join the academy, despite my fantastic student ratings and impressive research output.

This feeling has been compounded in the last few days by some of the better leftists I know joining the Putin and Assad love orgy, a love orgy that is actually about Russian imperialism and the destruction of the democratic resistance to Assad.  Arguing with people who have illusions in Putin and have called me a supporter of clerical fascism, and worse, is debilitating. It shows to me the bankruptcy of much of the left in Australia and internationally.

An alternative galvanising approach is to argue that this just means we revolutionaries need to double our work to keep alive the flame of socialism from below. True, but sometimes the candle burns out in individuals.

Maybe I will just throw part of my tax work away, not bothering with Tax Conferences anymore, or tax journals. The problem with that is that then they, the tax conservatariat, win.   And if I abandon politics and my blog for a while, the conservatives and wishy washy reformists win.

Perhaps I just need a holiday. Maybe this bone weariness too will pass. Maybe

“This feeling has been compounded in the last few days by some of the better leftists I know joining the Putin and Assad love orgy..”

You’re upset that your fellow leftists aren’t pro-ISIS like yourself.

Every time there is a terrorist attack by an ISIS supporter, you either ignore it or cover it up.

You picked the wrong side.

I am not pro-ISIS, as you well know, you lying moronic idiotic fuck wit. Too bad you wouldn’t join us at the Russian Embassy chanting against ISIS, and Putin and Assad, but morons like you have no interest in the struggle for democracy. Your interest is for one or other side of dictatorship, as long as the dictator is on ‘our’ rulers’ side. Anyway, I am no longer going to allow your shit to be published on my site after this lie. Crawl back into you Stalinist hole.
