Gerard Henderson – the gift that keeps on giving

You have to love Gerard Henderson. In Saturday’s Australian he was doing the dirt on how the left got it wrong this year. He mentioned Corey Oakley writing in Socialist ALLIANCE’s (!!!) Red Flag. Socialist Alternative publishes Red Flag, while Socialist Alliance puts out Green Left Weekly.

A simple google check might have confirmed this. Or maybe even reading the article that Corey wrote for Red Flag on Socialist ALTERNATIVE’s website? But what do facts matter, Gerard, when dissing the left?

Of course, if he could get such a simple obvious fact wrong you do have to wonder if he actually read the article. Here is a link, for the benefit of Gerard. Charlie Hebdo and the hypocrisy of pencils

What was the prediction Corey supposedly got so wrong in January 2015? Corey, writing in Socialist ALLIANCE’s (!!!) Red Flag, remember, ‘blames the West for the Islamist attacks and ‘predicts “inevitable reprisals” on “Muslims in the West.”‘ Henderson calls this ‘another flawed prediction.’ I dunno, but I would think this has in fact been the case, both at a government and political level and verbally and physically.

In fact what Corey actually said in part to the sanctimonious Western response to the Charlie Hebdo attacks was:

‘… every image that invoked the idea that Western culture could and would defend itself from Islamist extremism by waging a battle of ideas demonstrated the same historical and political amnesia.

‘Reality could not be more at odds with this ludicrous narrative.

‘For the last decade and a half the United States, backed to varying degrees by the governments of other Western countries, has rained violence and destruction on the Arab and Muslim world with a ferocity that has few parallels in the history of modern warfare.’ All true.

And he finished off with this:

‘ Meanwhile, Muslims in the West will, if they dare to walk the streets, do so in fear of the inevitable reprisals. And pencils aren’t what they will be afraid of.’ Ask Muslims in the West if this is true today.

I must admit I had hoped he mentioned me. Back in 2003 he did, attacking me for opposing the invasion of Iraq and crowing how wrong I, the Trotskyite, (his incorrect Stalinist description) was. More recently I pointed out that in fact I had been correct about Iraq and thanked him for improving my blog reader numbers for weeks. He hasn’t attacked me since. Pity, I could do with a boost to my readership numbers over Christmas.
