Archive for 'Julia Gillard'

Are these the Australian values you were talking about Gillard?

Inspired by Julia Gillard condemning the peaceful Muslim demonstration against racism in Sydney on Saturday, and her comment these were not Australian values, I have gone in search of Australian values.  Are these the Australian values you mean, Gillard? ‘A NATO airstrike killed eight women and girls in eastern Afghanistan, local officials reported …  The women were […]

The Australian: my unpublished letters

We all know Rupert Murdoch’s Australian newspaper is big on free speech. (Its own, if no-one else’s.) And investigative journalism. And making sure our leaders are people of integrity. So I thought I’d post the letters I sent to The Australian in the last few days that it hasn’t published.

Labor values: see you on the Coles picket line then Prime Minister?

If you were serious about representing ordinary working Australians and not big business, Julia Gillard, you’d join the Coles’ picket line at 6 am on Friday morning and mobilise the ALP and its members in Melbourne to be there to support these ordinary working Australians in their just fight against two greedy and very tough companies.

You could get a lift and an ear-bashing from Trades Hall at 6 am with Socialist Alternative.

See you on the picket line, Prime Minister.

Slip sliding away: a eulogy for Gillard Labor?

The Slipper scandal will drag on for a while. Labor could well survive with his support and that of Craig Thomson till an election in 2013. Then they will get annihilated because of the Slipper syndrome, power without principle, rule for the rich.

Maybe we could find a more fitting eulogy. How does this sound? This is the way Labor’s world ends, this is the way their world ends, this is the way their world ends, not with a bang but a slipper. Labor are indeed the hollow men and women.

Bob Carr: another ugly carcass in Gillard’s cabinet

Just when you thought Labor couldn’t get any lower, you remember Bob Carr exists. He’s a worthy addition to the Gillard cabinet, where he’ll fit right in with all the other neoliberal scumbags.

Victorian nurses, Gillard and Rudd: class politics versus crass politics

The farcical Punch and Judy show in Canberra is a consequence of the lack of fight from the trade union movement over the last 30 years. Victorian nurses are showing a different way, a better way, to win better pay and conditions and by doing that challenging the bosses’ industrial laws. Nurses in Victoria can win their demands, if they keep the industrial action going. They could even defeat the Fair Work Act penal powers and strike restrictions. The sideshow in Canberra won’t produce real change. Strikes can.

Gillard and Rudd: neoliberal nobodies in a party of political prostitutes

Labor is now a party of political prostitutes and nothing other than mass working class struggle and a sharp turn to the Left can get these pimps out of their bourgeois bordellos.

Gillard or Rudd? Labor fights over its executioner

The battle between Gillard and Rudd is a fight over who is the best executioner to lead Labor. The electric chair or lethal injection are the choices facing the ALP in this ‘leadership’ struggle.

Sexism or scrutiny?

Comments about Gillard’s hair or her dress sense or lack of affability can’t be divorced from the wider oppression of women in society. They reinforce stereotypes about women as having a role that must fit within the dominant power structure of capitalism – as objects of men’s desire and displaying ‘feminine’ characteristics.

However Bob Brown was being too cute by half in blaming criticism of Gillard on sexism. After all this is the do nothing Government he supports and sustains so attacks on Labor are also a criticism of him and his do nothing Greens.

You cannot hide behind sexism to divert attention away from the failure of Labor to inspire its base. That is part of the problem – Labor’s neoliberalism.

A resurgence in struggle, in fighting for equal pay now, free abortion on demand, free childcare, would challenge the very structures of capitalist oppression. Therein lies the way forward, not tired bleating about sexist reporting that ignores the systemic oppression of women under capitalism.

‘Turning back the boats’ means attacking the Tent Embassy and all it stands for

The duality of racism in Australia means that when Abbott inflames racist tensions by attacking refugees he lays the groundwork for more and more brutal attacks on our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters, including the Tent Embassy.
