This is why we are celebrating

Nation columnist Dave Zirin counters the media’s finger-wagging at those celebrating Margaret Thatcher’s death with the terrible facts about her brutal reign. In the words, of David Wearing, “People praising Thatcher’s legacy should show some respect for her victims.”

That would be nice, wouldn’t it? Let’s please show some respect for Margaret Thatcher’s victims. Let’s respect those who mourn every day because of her policies, but choose this one day to wipe away the tears. Then let’s organize to make sure that the history she authored does not repeat itself.

Neoliberalism: from Margaret Thatcher to Julia Gillard

So although Thatcher and Gillard have or had seemingly very different approaches to industrial relations, their goal is the same – to shift wealth from labour to capital to address falling profit rates. They use different strategies on occasion to get there. Thatcher tried to manhandle unions into a strait jacket. Labor in Australia asks workers nicely to try it on and compliments us on the fit. The way to fight the neoliberal Abbott is to fight the neoliberal Gillard.

Strike to destroy Thatcher’s rotten legacy

The best way I reckon to respond to Thatcher’s death would be to bury her legacy – the current British government – with a general strike, something major unions have been discussing.
