Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Tax the one per cent at 100 per cent

These ball park figures would indicate that a tax of 100% on any earnings of the one per cent above $250,000 would potentially bring in $36,000,000,000 annually. That is $36 billion a year in tax revenue. This is a handy amount for public health, education, transport, pensions, the disabled and to address climate change.

Yachts of the rich are so last year

I wrote this a few years ago and updated it last year. ‘The Sydney to Hobart yacht race is a race for the billionaires and multi-millionaires, the one percent. These people lead a very different life to us. They live off our hard work. They don’t and won’t mix with the rest of us. They […]

Turn back the yachts of the 1%

The Sydney to Hobart yacht race is a race for the billionaires and multi-millionaires, the one percent. These people lead a very different life to us. They live off our hard work. They don’t and won’t mix with the rest of us. They inhabit rich ghettos. They speak a different language of finance and investment and money. They even eat different food. We don’t want them here. It’s time to turn back the yachts.

Obama or Romney: the choice of the 1%

Me in today’s The Conversation on Obama or Romney: the choice of the 1%. http://theconversation.edu.au/obama-or-romney-the-choice-of-the-1-9498?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest+from+The+Conversation+for+18+September+2012&utm_content=Latest+from+The+Conversation+for+18+September+2012+CID_2eaf9c0accf385c1810e80dba70944a8&utm_source=campaign_monitor&utm_term=Obama+or+Romney+The+choice+of+the+1

Obama and Romney: the one percent’s choice

The US Presidential election is a choice between two representatives of big business. Romney offers a shit sandwich. Obama asks if you want fries with it. The task is to fight the one percent and build an alternative. Occupy gave us a glimpse of the possibilities. Winning the immediate fight and building that alternative, as Occupy and now the Chicago teachers’ strike shows, can only be done on the streets and in the workplaces, through demonstrations and strikes.

Stop the media lynching

It wasn’t a wild protest. It wasn’t a riot. It wasn’t thuggery.

Those false accusations are examples of the constant racist stereotyping by the one percent and their media and part of the wider agenda to deepen even further the oppression of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

From the war in Afghanistan to a lockout in Australia, the battle remains the same

The soldiers in Afghanistan are fighting and dying to protect the Alan Joyces of the world and their right to make profits off our labour; their right to attack our wages and jobs; their right to lock us out.

They are fighting and dying for the one percent.
